When the news broke last week that fan favourite TV show
High Fidelity (available to stream on Crave) had
received the axe from the powers that be at Hulu, fans were uuupset. The show, based on the Nick Hornby novel and following the popular 2000 film starring John Cusack, was a modern spin on the tale of record shop owner Rob, swapping the male protagonist for a witty and graceful Zoë Kravitz. The day the show was cancelled, Kravitz mourned the loss on her Instagram with a series of fun behind-the-scenes cast shots with the hashtag #breakupssuck, but it was a reply she made in the comments that's stirred up some buzz.
Her Insta swan song was filled with support from fans and celebs alike, like Lena Waithe, Questlove, Jason Momoa, Reese Witherspoon and Halle Berry. But it was actress Tessa Thompson who really got Zoë talking. Thompson commented, “I will miss you alllllllllllll so much,” to which Kravitz replied, tongue firmly in cheek, “it's cool. At least hulu has a ton of other shows starring women of color we can watch. oh wait.” Dang.[caption id="attachment_4945872" align="alignleft" width="960"]

Insecure, available on Hulu and
Crave, which has a diverse cast led by the Emmy-nominated creator Issa Rae, to which Ms. Kravitz responded, “me too!” At press time, Hulu had not responded to Kravitz’s remarks.
Diversity in
casting decisions for mainstream productions has been a
hot topic lately, especially as stories of BIPOC (Black Indigenous Persons Of Colour) actors being
bullied or intimidated on set have dominated headlines.[video_embed id='2008957']RELATED: ‘High Fidelity’ cancelled after one season [/video_embed]Hulu does broadcast the show
Wu-Tang: An American Saga, which features a predominantly Black cast, and it also has
Ramy, which stars Muslim actor and Golden Globe winner Ramy Youssef.
Love, Victor, another Hulu effort, has a Latinx main character. However, unlike
High Fidelity, all the leads in those shows are male.
Little Fires Everywhere, which is a limited series on Hulu starring Kerry Washington, is the only one with a Black woman as the lead character. The news of
High Fidelity’s cancellation comes as a bit of a mystery, even to the cast (which includes Canadian actor and former MuchMusic VJ
Rainbow Sun Francks), because the show received critical acclaim and a mass following after a 10-episode first season.
Deadline has reported that the decision wasn’t easy considering the “internal support,” but it leaves one to wonder if the show’s complete
shut-out from the Emmy nominations was a determining factor. You can watch all of S1 of
