The Bernie Mac Show

[caption id="attachment_5064414" align="alignleft" width="2000"] Crave[/caption]Classic comedies led by Black actors are beginning to roll out on streaming services, and The Bernie Mac Show has found a home on Crave. If you can’t tell, this is a big deal. Beloved for his brash, tell-it-how-it is style of comedy. Bernie Mac rose to notoriety in the '90s on tour with Def Comedy Jam before starring in Spike Lee’s classic film, The Original Kings of Comedy, alongside Steve Harvey, Cedric the Entertainer and D.L. Hughley.Helping to revitalize the single-camera sitcom and loosely based on his stand-up routine. The Bernie Mac Show premiered in 2001 and followed Bernie and his wife Wanda, as they reluctantly become parents after his sister leaves her three mouthy children unexpectedly with him en-route to rehab. From there, let’s just say his approach to parenthood is not politically correct. The show was also created by now television legend Larry Wilmore, the co-creator of Insecure and executive producer of ABC’s Black-ish. We can write an essay on why this is a big deal. But, it’s probably better if you see it for yourself. You can stream all five seasons of The Bernie Mac Show on Crave today.

Moonbase 8

Fred Armisen, Tim Heidecker and John C. Reilly star in Showtime’s new comedy series Moonbase 8 as three middling astronauts attempting to qualify for their first lunar mission. As you would expect from a series starring this comedy trio, Moonbase 8 is heartfelt and hilarious. The series follows the mediocre spacemen as they face setbacks and triumphs while living away from their families on campus at NASA. Think Silicon Valley meets Apollo 13. On top of that, all three actors pull double-duty as executive producers and co-creators, making the series a bit of a passion project. You can watch the entire first season of Moonbase 8 on Crave on November 8th.

 Hidden Gem: Burden

Set in a South Carolina town and starring Forest Whitaker, Garrett Hedlund and Usher, Burden follows a former member of the Ku Klux Klan after being persuaded to leave the racist group by his girlfriend. Grappling with timely themes of racism, hate and redemption, the film sees a local Black pastor and his congregation give Mike Burden (Hedlund) refuge as the Klan seeks him out for revenge. The film is an honourable exploration of challenging themes by first-time director and veteran actor Andrew Heckler and worth checking out this weekend. You can stream Burden on Crave today.
