President Trump has been doing his best to ensure that voters in the upcoming election are unable to mail in their ballots. Trump's voter suppression tactics have included enlisting the Postmaster General to remove sorting machines and mailboxes, which is wreaking havoc on the United States postal system and causing mass delays. In a new ad by a Democratic super PAC, actor Wayne Knight has reprised his role as one of TV's most famous mailmen to remind Trump that the mail never stops.Knight appears in character by wearing a USPS uniform as
Seinfeld’s Newman. Hello…Newman. Although Knight never references the '90s comedy or his character specifically, we know a devious postman when we see one.“According to this month-old issue of Dr. Roberta Greenberg’s Time magazine subscription, there’s been a systematic, premeditated assault on the U.S. mail by President Trump and his so-called Postmaster General,” says Knight before spitting into the air. “That guy’s never even licked a stamp.”[video_embed id='2051402']RELATED: 'I'm not going to do a virtual debate'[/video_embed]Continuing, Knight lists just some of the things affected by the Trump administration’s efforts to derail the USPS, which has delayed the delivery of goods people rely on for survival, including Social Security benefits and medication. “They have the unmitigated gall to try to slow down the mail, when everybody knows that the only person who can slow down the mail… is a mailman!”Knight concludes the ad by encouraging people to vote in person or request their ballots early if voting by mail. The mail carrier also has one final message for the president of the United States. “Alright Donnie, you know those tax returns? The ones you don’t want anyone seeing? You should never have mailed those,” says Knight before breaking into a devious Newman-esque laugh. The new ad was written by
Seinfeld writer and producer David Mandel, who went on to become the show runner for
Veep. Knight told
EW that he has been contacted by several major organizations and writers to reprise the role of Newman in the wake of the Postal Service scandal currently taking place in the US, but has been hesitant to bring the character back. That was, until Mandel stepped in, along with Democratic super PAC PACRONYM.
"If we could capture the voice, if we get it funny, and we could get the message out, I felt like it would be disseminated in a way that would reach people, and that was what was important," said Knight. The actor also told
EW that although he played a character who spent his career trying to undercut the Postal Service, the organization deserves the praise and support of the American people. "Newman has been trying to subvert the Postal Service for his entire career. He has not been able to do it,” said Knight. “It is a well-oiled machine with a couple of bad cogs in it that every now and then get caught. But in general, the thought that you can deliver something to a one-room post office in Alaska for 55 cents is pretty incredible."Knight made his first appearance as Jerry Seinfeld’s mailman neighbour and nemesis Newman in Season 3 of
Seinfeld. The actor had a recurring role on the award-winning comedy and even appeared in the series finale in 1998.[video_embed id='2030335']Before you go: Cat attempts daily hilarious attack on mail carrier[/video_embed]
