Monday night’s episode was not only emotional because it was one of the last times coaches Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend could hype their team members, but also because one contestant’s song choice gave Legend the space to talk about the recent tragedy his family endured. Legend’s raw and visceral reaction to a performance on Monday was a reminder to hold on to those you have and let music heal you when it can.
Both John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen have bravely shared the pain of losing their son Jack this year, but on Monday night, viewers saw some of the family’s grief firsthand. Team Legend superstar singer John Holiday was tasked with singing Coldplay’s “Fix You,” a song that Chris Martin famously wrote for his then-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow following the death of her father. During rehearsal, Legend said that he along with his wife and daughter Luna cried together while listening to “Fix You” ahead of Holiday’s performance.
“Going through what we went through as a family and then what so many other families around the world, there’s a lot of folks who are struggling and need this kind of message,” said Legend.
When it finally was time for the Operatic singer to take a seat at the piano, Holiday gave a masterclass in how to embody the emotion of a song. “The very last note you gave broke me in a way that I had to shut off [because of] being on live national television,” said Kelly, adding that she loved that Holiday took his coach’s note and let his perfect voice break for the deeply personal song. Coach John was also in tears, commending his team member for living in the emotion of the song. At least, we think that’s what he said. Unlike Kelly Clarkson, we were not on TV and did let the tears flow.
Admittedly, when we heard that folk rock singer Jim Ranger had been given “Without You” to sing, we had a sudden urge for grilled cheese sandwiches with extra cheese and a side of cheese. We quickly began eating our words after only one line. Jim showed about 50 new sides to his voice during Monday’s performance, with host Carson Daly rightfully calling the opening performance a show closer. “I was engrossed, I was moved,” said John, who was on his feet throughout Jim’s rendition of the iconic ballad. “What a beautiful performance. I believe that was your best on the show and one of the best we’ve seen this season,” continued John, calling Jim a force to be reckoned with it. “You did it. You just did it dude,” added Coach Blake, who admitted that he was concerned Jim took his advice to sing until he passed out literally. That rock did look like a rough spot to fall from.
Hearing that Desz was going to sing En Vogue’s “Don’t Let Go” already had us ready to rage-groove along to what was sure to be a stunning cover, but we weren’t prepared for the added rises and falls of the tsunami Desz unleashed at the mic. “I felt the fire,” said Legend, who spent the entire performance on his feet. Desz’s coach Kelly Clarkson looked ready to explode throughout the performance and finally got the chance to unleash her praise after Desz delivered her final devastating note. “Literally this is possibly my favourite performance I’ve ever had on my team,” said Kelly, adding that she was preparing her official application to be Desz’s background singer. “I think you are so incredibly gifted.” Don’t let go of Desz, voters.
Fifteen-year-old singer Carter Rubin closed out the show on Monday with “The Rainbow Connection,” giving a performance that had his real mom and his pseudo-coach mom Gwen Stefani in tears. “That was flawless,” said Gwen. “That was God answering my prayers. That was so beautiful and I’m so happy for you,” continued Gwen, adding that she was honoured Carter picked her and exclaiming that she was in love with The Voice. Moms are notorious for having a lot of feelings. Carter may be the youngest performer this season, but massive range and consistently strong performances (including the live shows – so scary!) have made him one of the biggest threats this season. His moms are so proud.
