Another day, another opportunity for Gwyneth Paltrow to give you health, lifestyle and sex advice. Strap on your skepticism caps—this one is going to take some critical thinking. This time she's coming to us in the form of a TV show that looks completely and totally bonkers. But with a soft pastel palette. Hmmm...Just as the back-to-work grind starts to set in on the Monday after the holidays, GP hit her loyal fans and admirers with the trailer for her upcoming Netflix series,
the goop lab with Gwyneth Paltrow (she sure loves her lower-case). In the series, the controversial lifestyle guru and her team sit down with various experts to learn all about some absolutely wild stuff. We're talking exorcisms, psychics, psychedelics, public nudity and some full-body convulsion thing that could be one of the aforementioned things or something else entirely.
Now, you probably know that goop has inspired an entire internet journalism subcategory we'll call "No, Gwyn, don't do that" wherein experts debunk and, in some cases,
urgently warn against, health trends she's endorsed (see
Vaginal Steaming and the
Vagina Egg). With that in mind, we have some pressing questions and general musings about the above promo.
- Are they really allowed to call it a "lab"? Is there going to be real science or pseudoscience? Will we even be able to tell?
- Confirmed: this is explicit.
- The fact that at one point a woman literally says "it's unregulated" is a red flag.
- Points for focus on normalizing women's bodies and pleasure, tho.
- There is real research into microdosing psychedelics so that could be legit. (But the science is still far from conclusive).
- Exorcisms is wellness now?
- Is that Julianne Hough at 1:02?
The series was announced back in February 2019, but at the time, it wasn't clear that Paltrow would be the host. It's interesting that GP is actually going to be helming this thing, considering she's not a huge contributor to the Goop website and
doesn't always seem to know what's on it. For
the goop lab, though, it looks like she'll be heavily featured in the 30-minute episodes and even undergoing some procedures herself. While of course, there are the lovers of all things Goop, there are also plenty of people asking compelling questions such as "
what the f are you doing to people?" and "
Like, seriously?" and "
just why?" but I guess we'll all have to reserve judgment until we watch for ourselves.[video_embed id='-1']RELATED: 3 films you need to see this holiday season[/video_embed]
