'Squid Game' director Hwang Dong-hyuk reveals what's in store for season 2

Time to put on your green tracksuits, fans!
Netflix Netflix

Netflix is notorious for canceling fan-favourite shows after just two seasons. Remember Altered Carbon? Or Sense8? How about The OA, or Luke Cage? (That last one we’re still bitter about…)  So it’s a surprise and a delight to learn the news coming out of Korea today that Squid Game is in talks with the streaming giant for a season 2 . . .  AND a season 3!

Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke with Korean media outlet KBS to reveal the news.

“I’m currently in the midst of discussions with Netflix about Season 2 and Season 3,” he revealed. “I think we’ll be reaching some sort of conclusion [to our discussions] soon…we know that many people are waiting, so everyone is working hard to prepare for the next season with a positive outlook.”

Us in our green track suits over here are pretty confident Squid Game will last beyond season 3 (fingers crossed forever), considering the astronomically high ratings it received on Netflix: subscribers around the world collectively watched 2.1 billion hours of it! That’s more than 239,700 years and more than anything else Netflix has released. Ranking at number 2, the bodice-ripping period drama Bridgerton clocks in at 625 million hours watched. So Squid Game is leaps and bounds ahead of the competition.

Hwang Dong-hyuk also shared some plot and character details for season 2 that they’re working on. “The focus [of the season] will be the story of [Lee Jung Jae‘s character] Seong Gi Hun unraveling [the mysteries of the organization behind the game],” he revealed.

“The overarching plotline of Season 2 will be the story of the people that Gi Hun meets and the people he chases after.”

Earlier this month, he also revealed to Entertainment Weekly that his idea for season 2 has a very Star Wars feel to it. “As for the Front Man [Lee Byung-hun] who was also a past winner but became a Front Man, it's like Darth Vader. Some end up Jedi and some become Darth Vader, right? I think that maybe Gi-hun will go through a certain critical point where he is put through a test as well," he told the outlet.

As for Netflix, they’re keeping mum about the season 3 deal in the works, saying only in a statement, “It’s true that we are discussing a wide variety of possibilities for Squid Game, including the production of a Season 3, but nothing has yet been set in stone.”
