The new Gossip Girl, which will be 10 episodes long, was originally supposed to debut on HBO Max this year but because of the pandemic it (like so many other productions) was delayed. The streaming service is now planning a 2021 release, and the show will also air here in Canada on Crave. As previously announced Kristen Bell reprises her role as the Gossip Girl narrator, but as anyone who tuned into the series’ controversial finale will recall she wasn’t actually the person running the gossip website in the end. That means it’s anyone’s guess who will be behind the account when the series returns.“Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl,” reads HBO Max’s official description. “The prestige series will address just how much social media—and the landscape of New York itself—has changed in the intervening years.”Earlier this year creator Joshua Safran opened up about the new edition, saying that it’s not quite a reboot, nor is it a remake or a sequel. Actually a “continuation” may be the best bet in terms of what to call it, as he revealed this story takes place eight years after the original. He also confirmed that although the new show will be linked to the former universe, it does not feature any of the former actors or their relatives. (It does, however, feature the original costume designer, Eric Daman.)“The truth of the matter is, we covered so much ground the first time around, you would have seen all the relatives,” Safran told Us Weekly. “Kids is not possible because they were, like, 15 when we started, so they wouldn’t have kids in high school now. As for relatives, we went so deep into the family history, there are no relatives left! But that isn’t to say that people won’t pop in.”Safran also opened up about the project last year in an interview with Vulture, where he revealed that this iteration is going to be a lot more inclusive than the first. “There was not a lot of representation the first time around on the show,” he told the publiation last November.“I was the only gay writer I think the entire time I was there. Even when I went to private school in New York in the ‘90s, the school didn’t necessarily reflect what was on Gossip Girl. So, this time around the leads are nonwhite. There’s a lot of queer content on this show. It is very much dealing with the way the world looks now, where wealth and privilege come from, and how you handle that. The thing I can’t say is there is a twist, and that all relates to the twist.”Spoken like a true Gossip Girl, and you know you love it. xoxo[video_embed id='2075246']BEFORE YOU GO: Parents document baby and dog's friendship from birth to present day[/video_embed]@olv gossip girl reboot finally filming! #gossipgirl #nyc #tgw pic.twitter.com/MzFGdgh1t2
