Shawn Mendes reads out his texts with Camila in ‘Spill your Guts or Fill your Guts’ challenge

Shawn avoids (what we’re calling) 'The Cloches of Calamity' by sharing the text thread.

Celebrities will never learn, will they? They keep agreeing to play “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts” on The Late Late Show with James Corden (weekdays at 12:30 a.m. ET on CTV), but then they end up eating absolutely vomitus items like a salmon smoothie, a giant water scorpion, cod sperm, fish eyes, or a bull penis rather than answer very simple questions! Look guys, you may be talented and good-looking, but honesty in this case is not the best policy! Just lie and then deny it all later!

Ontario’s own Shawn Mendes (who recently revealed he's bringing Camila and their puppy home for Christmas!) could never do that it seems, because as he was the next willing participant on the show all celebs fear to tread, he was honest to a fault (how Canadian of him). The singer-songwriter wasn’t in-person to spin the lazy Susan of torture with James, however, so they used (what we’re calling) The Cloches of Calamity to lift the veil on some truly disgusting items: blood and pork jelly, a mixed bug trifle, scorpion-dusted plantains, 1000 year old eggnog, a cow tongue and a bull penis. Everything a growing boy needs.

“You know how sick you guys are at The Late Late Show?,” Shawn asked. “You shipped this to me! You refrigerated and shipped this to me across America! That’s how sick you guys are!”

“It’s how committed we are to promoting your album that we all hope will go to number one tomorrow,” James cantankerously retorted (and we are here for it).

When it comes to this game, the show likes to get both the celeb guest and James to rank their fellow celebs from best to worst, just to create drama (btw, thanks for that drama, it feeds our soul, NGL). And this game was full of it! Shawn had to rank his collabs with Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, and his own girlfriend Camila Cabello from best to worst. He wouldn’t do it of course and so down went the blood and pork jelly.

“I don’t think it’s actually that bad,” he naively said as he sunk his fork into it. “I could be at some sort of Michelin star restaurant in Norway and they would feed me this and I would think it’s fine!” Then of course he took a whiff of it and nearly lost his lunch.

James surprisingly avoided having to down a mixed bug trifle by being able to correctly name all seven members of BTS (it’s Jimin, Jin, V, Suga, J Hope, Jungkook, RM, in case you were googling). Come on, he's had them on the show an inordinate number of times and he's known by the boys as Papa Mochi.

There were lots of other instances of ranking. Shawn couldn’t rank the highest paying endorsement deal he’s done between Armani, Calvin Klein or Roots Canada so he had to swallow scorpion-dusted plantains (that’s a delicacy in some places, probably). James refused to rank Harry Styles, Niall Horan or Shawn from best to worst residencies on his show (“It’s like asking me to choose between my favourite long-haired, hippie-loving, tattooed children and I wouldn’t do that!”) and so 1000-year-old eggnog it was (“I do appreciate whoever grated the nutmeg over the top, it did make a difference!” he quipped after a series of bleeped out expletives).

Then Shawn had to read out the last five text messages from gf Camila, and we all held our collective breath. Would there be something saucy or naughty? What if they’re in a fight? What if they’re gossiping about another celeb? Or better yet, what if they’re talking about marriage and babies!!?

But nope, we knew it wouldn’t be anything exciting when Shawn was all too eager to read them out.

“Look this is not bad at all!” he said, pulling out his phone. “She said, ‘Is it disgusting? How’s it going? Ew. LOL’ Then I said, ‘The interview was awesome, but now I’m about to eat some gross stuff.’ Then she said, ‘That’s amazing. Are you going to do a spill your guts with Matthew [McConnaughey]?’ I said, ‘No just me, I’m really grossed out.’ She said, “[expletive] Lord, what’s the worst on there?’ That’s it!"

James looked around at his staff like he was being punk’d before commenting, “Aw it’s really disappointing.” Um, understatement of the year, Corden! At least Shawn avoided eating the cow tongue. It was grey and the size of Andre The Giant’s foot.

How was he supposed to eat that and then perform his new song “Dream” on the show directly after? It’s a good thing his interview preceded this game, so he could be appropriately present as he and Matthew McConaughey described their bromance.

Finally, the last cloche of calamity insisted that James rank his costars in The Prom from best to worst. Of course Meryl Streep goes to the top, ‘natch, but ranking Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells, and Kerry Washington? Nah.

Lifting the cloche, James exclaimed, “It’s our good friend, the bull penis!” There’s a phrase we’d never thought we’d hear, but this is 2020 so…
