It was one for the history books on Wednesday’s final of World of Dance. Season four ended only days before TV and film sets around the world were shut down due to COVID-19, which meant that judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo were the only audience in-studio for the finale performances.Four distinct dance styles were represented on the show's final bow, which included several new elements in the form of props.( The judges like dancers to leave it all on the stage, but sometimes props should be left backstage.) Trio MDC3 went home with the $1 million cash prize, making them the first contemporary act to ever win World of Dance. Not too shabby.[video_embed id='1966249']RELATED: Derek Hough’s latest project is all about inspiring kids to move in new ways[/video_embed]
MDC3
It was anyone’s game going into the finale, but the one group that had a slight edge was MDC3, who took home the highest score during the Semi-Finals. The trio were also the youngest group in this season’s finale as the only act representing the Junior division. Their finale performance arguably didn’t have the same emotion and storytelling element as their previous appearances, but it was still jam-packed with stunning lifts and tricks. The group also upped their traditional contemporary dance choreography and showcased their ability to dance in sync more so than any of their other routines this season. Plus, that headslide. We bow down. “It was breathtaking at moments and I couldn’t take my eyes off you guys,” said Lopez, who added that this was a goosies-worthy routine. MDC3 were also the only group nto ot incorporate a prop into their performance, which may have helped them clinch the top spot.Score: 95.7
GEOMETRIE VARIABLE
It’s still unclear what to call Géométrie Variable’s dance style, but Ne-Yo’s "sexy math dance" moniker may be the best descriptor. The French trio were the only group on Wednesday to successfully use a prop, adding an oversized cube (math!) and lasers to their perfectly in-sync performance. The trio were an unconventional pick for the finale, but their inclusion was a must right from the Qualifiers. Where does one sigh up for sexy math dance lessons?Score: 95.3
JEFFERSON Y ADRIANITA
Jefferson and Adrianita made history twice this season. Not only are they the only Salsa duo to ever make it to the Finals, but we’re pretty sure they’re the only group to ever name their child after one of the judges. Baby Derek should be proud of his parents, who showcased their incredible speed on Wednesday night and their fearlessness with lifts and tricks. Although the stage and double staircase ended up causing some clunky moments for the pairs (dancers–don’t be pressured into props in the finale!), they still delivered a clean, high-energy and exciting final performance.Score: 95.3
OXYGEN
The underdogs of the finale went out swinging on Tuesday night with their performance to Awolnation’s “Sail.” Oxygen delivered a best-of routine that had all their biggest hits, including their Shiva formation, intricate hand choreography and a clear storyline that was cleanly delivered with bold theatrics. The group set the bar high for themselves and may have fallen a bit short with the underuse of their space pod prop and their last eight counts of the routine, but their final World of Dance showing was still one of the most elaborate and entertaining of all the performances this season.Score: 93
