It was just a few months ago that Nicki Minaj put aside those “Barbie Dreams” and announced to the world that she’s hanging up her career in order to pursue a family. Of course she then retracted those comments with a promise that her exit from the spotlight deserved a wider conversation and she actually wasn’t going anywhere. The Barbz were relieved. But then in November she took a break from social media altogether and seemed to stop hanging out in public.Well now we know that the “Anaconda” singer was just doing her. And by her, we mean pounding the alarm and guest-starring on the upcoming season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which premieres on February 28. Minaj took to Twitter to make the big announcement on January 30. “Welcome to the main stage of RuPaul’s Drag Race! I’m Nicki Minaj and I pledge allegiance to the drag!” she wrote. It’s the first time the superstar has appeared on the series, but considering how many contestants have invoked her over the years (fans vividly remember season 10 competitor/All-Stars 4 champ Monét X Change’s epic performance of “Pound the Alarm") this feels appropriate. It’s also worth remembering that Minaj has plenty of experience bringing the buzz to reality television—who could forget that one season of American Idol that she judged alongside Mariah Carey, and the two feuded the entire time?Given the feel-good tone of Drag Race, it appears as though Minaj’s time on the series will be a little less dramatic.“The best word to describe season 12 is ‘OVANESS!'” RuPaul recently told Entertainment Weekly. “Our producers have come up with twisted, outrageous challenges that raise the bar for all competition of reality. Our celebrity guest judges are truly legendary. And this cast of queens is, dare I say, the most talented we’ve ever had. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, a fresh crop of queens arrives and blows our minds.”

As for Minaj, it seems like she’s ready to start embracing the spotlight again. After a surprise wedding to Kenneth Petty, dealing with the trolls who keep accusing her of not writing her own songs, and tons of pregnancy rumours flying around the Internet, the break may have done her good.Minaj and Petty were out and about earlier this week for an appearance at the Mr. Jones’ nightclub in Miami during a Super Bowl weekend event, and she ‘grammed the whole thing—pink hair and all.Looks like the Grammy winner is officially back.
