Netflix has snatched up a 16-episode order of the comedy, which McCarthy and Falcone will star in and produce under their production company, On the Day. The series is a workplace comedy that revolves around a mid-level tech support guy named Clark Thompson (Falcone) who falls in love with his co-worker Amy Luck (McCarthy). Unfortunately before anything can come of it, Clark also becomes an unwilling messenger of God. Because nothing throws a wrench in your romantic plans like an entanglement with a deity.
According to Entertainment Weekly, fans can expect roller skating, a lake of fire, and an impending apocalypse among other highlights when the series goes into production. And you know that when McCarthy is involved, physical comedy is totally on the table. Meanwhile collaborator Michael McDonald will executive produce and direct.
This is the second project for the married couple to land at the streaming service: they just wrapped filming on Thunder Force, a film written and directed by Falcone. McCarthy stars in the top-secret story alongside Octavia Spencer, Tyrel Jackson Williams and Melissa Leo.
While McCarthy has become a notable film star following her 2012 Oscar-nominated performance in Bridesmaids, she has a long history with TV shows. She led the small screen for six seasons on the Chuck Lorre sitcom Mike & Molly (which landed her four Emmy nods and a win); she previously starred on Gilmore Girls as the fan-favourite chef Sookie; and in 2007 she also had a supporting role on the short-lived but critically acclaimed Christina Applegate series Samantha Who.
Most recently McCarthy took over hosting duties from Steve Harvey on the child-friendly reality series Little Big Shots, which she and Falcone executive produce. And the pair also produced the TV Land series Nobodies, appearing in smaller roles throughout the show’s two-season run.
Speaking of Falcone, he seems to prefer directing to acting (he typically tackles smaller roles when he does appear onscreen). However he and McCarthy have definitely played on-screen love interests before (no one can forget their turn on Bridesmaids). Over the years the couple has also collaborated on tons of other projects, including Tammy, Life of the Party, The Boss, and the recently-released Superintelligence, which is available to stream now on Crave.
Last month the super couple also celebrated their 15-year wedding anniversary, proving that sometimes Hollywood couples can make it after all. “I’m so lucky and grateful to be married to such a lovely, smart, kind and wonderful person,” Falcone wrote on Instagram on October 7. “Happy fifteenth Anniversary, Mooch! Here’s to 500 more.”
And, if fans have their way, there will hopefully be about 500 more collaborations too.
