Often, celebs will say they always knew they would become famous performers, but for Lin-Manuel Miranda, it’s obvious that he literally had no choice. Showtunes and performing are in his blood, and that's never been more obvious than when he joined Jimmy Fallon and his own father Luis A. Miranda Jr. on The Tonight Show (weeknights at 11:35pET on CTV2) Tuesday night. The trio played a game that made it patently clear Lin-Manuel was groomed from a young age for the glittering stage.Father and son took turns muting their laptop audio while Jimmy asked questions about Lin-Manuel’s childhood secrets—consider it a father-son version of the "Bro Challenge" Chris and Scott Evans get up to every time they're on the show. The Mirandas had to reveal things like Lin's most embarrassing moment or what he wanted to be as a little boy, hoping that their answers would line up. Not only did they line up, we learned that the genius behind the Broadway smash hit Hamilton was almost thrown in the slammer for his love of doo-wopping.
“He got summons and sort of arrested for singing in the subway with friends, collecting money while he was going to school,” Luis revealed over video-chat when asked to detail his son's most embarrassing moment.“I feel like he would probably think that’s cool!” Jimmy laughed before adding, “No, it’s not cool! Do not get arrested! But I feel like a little doo-wop is kind of fun.”When Lin-Manuel unmuted himself, it turned out that wasn't exactly his most embarrassing moment because 1) his real most embarrassing moment has been a secret for decades and 2) the doo-wopping really was kinda fun.“Me and my doo-wop group got stopped by the cops for singing Billy Joel in the subway," Lin-Manuel elaborated. "I’m not embarrassed by that! I was embarrassed that the summons was way more than we made while we were panhandling!”“I had to get a lawyer to help them out!” Papa Luis added.Frankly Luis, it feels like you had some responsibility in this, raising your son to have Broadway in his blood. (But real talk: we're very glad this is an instance they can laugh about now because that's definitely not always the case when it comes to run-ins with the law). During the same game, Lin-Manuel revealed that his old man would play show tunes non-stop in the car, essentially grooming his son to be a world-class performer.[video_embed id='1988839']RELATED: Does the 'Hamilton' experience hold up at home? [/video_embed]“’(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life,’ he played that song in our Subaru for a solid year! And I just wanted to hear ‘Be My Baby’ which was the next track on the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. He would just hit rewind and play it again," Lin said when Jimmy asked his father's go-to karaoke song. "That, or probably like, The Greatest Showman,” he added, explaining that his father even has a replica of Hugh Jackman’s red jacket from the film.“I never had a chance at another living,” he said. “It was always gonna be show tunes!”You know, if you can't get enough of the musical Miranda stories, you're going to love why the duo were on the show in the first place. Lin-Manuel and Luis just released a documentary, Siempre, Luis (watch now on Crave) which chronicles Luis's life beginning with his move to New York from Puerto Rico in the 1970s. The film unpacks his career as a Democratic political consultant in New York and his work since retirement, most notably, his efforts, along with Lin-Manuel, to provide to relief to communities in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017.Watch Siempre, Luis anytime on Crave and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon weeknights at 11:35pET on CTV2.[video_embed id='-1']BEFORE YOU GO: Paralyzed dog still loves to play fetch [/video_embed]
