An Instagram-gaffing Randall (Sterling K. Brown), an honest Kevin (Justin Hartley), and a major confession from Kate (Chrissy Metz)? This season of This Is Us (Tuesdays, 9 pET, CTV) is really digging deep when it comes to exploring the Big Three. And the latest installment, “Honestly,” is just more proof.

Kate Reveals a Major Secret

It’s easy to forget about the tough adoption stuff that Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan) are going through this season when you put it next to the fact that Kevin and Madison (Caitlin Thompson) are having twins and planning on getting hitched, or up against Randall and his ongoing struggles with identity. Add in the Randall’s birth-mother stuff, Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) ongoing memory loss, and the show’s treatment of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests, and it seems like no one is really talking about this adoption in the Pearson family—there are just too many other things going on. That could also be in part because Kate and Toby haven’t exactly opened up to their crew about the life-changing decision they’re about to make. But as Kate proved in the episode, it is definitely going to be life-changing. And it will bring up a lot of stuff for her in the process. Stuff that not even Toby knew about, like the fact that her awful former boyfriend Marc (Austin Abrams) apparently got her pregnant when she was a teenager.Kate didn’t actually say she had an abortion on screen. But the way she was triggered in her conversation with Ellie (Annie Funke) coupled with the flashbacks to teen Kate looking at a positive pregnancy test, definitely makes it seem like she might have. Fans knew Marc was a shoddy and abusive boyfriend, but that intel is next-level in terms of unpacking some of the very real trauma Kate has gone through in her life. At this point, it seems like all three of the Pearsons—and not just Randall—could really benefit from some time in therapy. For now, as fans wait to see how Toby reacts to Kate’s confession and whether that will affect Ellie’s decision to give the couple her baby, the good news is that Kate and Toby do adopt at some point. That was confirmed in a flashback last season when viewers met Hailey (Adelaide Kane), AKA Baby Jack’s sister. Now the real questions are whether they adopt her together and under what circumstances. Kate keeping this kind of secret will obviously affect Toby, and as a character that guy famously doesn’t always react the way fans expect him to in situations like this…

Digging Deeper into the Kevin of it All

Kate wasn’t the only Pearson getting honest in the episode though. This week, Kevin met his professional match in director Jordan Martin Foster on the set of their new movie, Glass Eye. The director was tough on Kevin, in part because, as Kevin learned, the director could tell he wasn’t giving it his all. That storyline matched up to flashbacks to when Kevin was a preteen, and he wanted to quit football because it was too hard. In a scene that was loaded with mom-shame Jack told Rebecca that she had made their son “soft” for letting him always quit when things got tough, a conversation that Kevin overheard. The good news is that hearing those words forced Kevin to finally work for the things he wants, teaching him that he can’t just sail through life on his charm and good looks alone. While Kevin’s overall journey may still be the least relatable to viewers (he is working for an Oscar, after all), everyone can relate to having to just dig in sometimes. So it’s kind of nice that the writers are recognizing that and making Kevin more relatable this season. Between last week’s exploration into his confidence and body issues, and this week digging deeper into how he doesn’t actually just have things handed to him, the series is really starting to show a fuller picture of a guy you might actually want to root for.

Randall Goes Viral

Of course someone fans have always rooted for on this show is Randall, whether he’s learning more about his identity and background, being couple goals with Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) or trying to better his city. This week he became even more endearing though when he brought Malik (Asante Blackk) under his wing during career day, and even offered him an internship despite a major screw up.[video_embed id='2073722']RELATED: Jon Huertas from 'This Is Us' shares his experience with racism in Hollywood [/video_embed]And speaking of that screw up… raise your hand if Sterling K. Brown stripping down while singing and busting out some “dance moves” basically made your week. It was certainly enough to make Randall’s constituents go all-in. How could they not, given that the guy first broke down with emotion over his dead father, and then (accidentally, thanks to Malik having to take an important phone call about his daughter), show them how buff he is on Instagram Live? Just when Randall thought he couldn’t have anything else on his plate, his little show went viral. Like national news, meme-making viral.Enter the Vietnamese man from last week, whom viewers learned has some sort of a connection with Randall’s birth mom. In the show’s closing moments he too saw the video, and immediately realized the connection. Looks like the councilman will be getting a visit in his near future, and given all of the questions fans have about this particular storyline, it can’t come soon enough.Watch This Is Us Tuesdays at 9 pET on CTV.[video_embed id='2049925']BEFORE YOU GO: 'Horse girl' from Alberta can gallop and jump just like a horse [/video_embed]
