Jonathan Scott reveals he hadn’t seen 'New Girl' before dating Zooey Deschanel

Jonathan Scott reportedly didn’t know the rules of True American or dating a celebrity before meeting current girlfriend Zooey Deschanel. The home improvement star revealed in a podcast chat this week that while he was aware of Zooey Deschanel and her classic holiday movie Elf before the pair met, he had never watched her TV show New Girl. He could have at least had an episode or two on in the background while laying a tile floor.Scott and Deschanel appeared together on the latest episode of At Home With Drew and Linda, the podcast hosted by Jonathan’s twin brother Drew Scott and his wife Linda Phan. The episode was recorded pre-quarantine, which means the couples were able to record the episode while in close physical proximity.

“I had never seen New Girl before we started dating,” said Scott, adding that he had recently finished the series. “True love is driving five hours to see your love for one or watching their whole show.” Really? Watching your beautiful girlfriend in a delightful half-hour comedy where she is the star is like a give-hour commute? Maybe Scott wasn’t a fan of seeing Deschanel’s character date Dermot Mulroney. After we started dating, I was like, 'Is it weird that I still like to watch this show?' If I’m on a plane and there’s a Property Brothers marathon, that’s what I’m going to watch. That’s what I would have watched before I even met you guys,” said Deschanel. “I just liked the show. I wasn’t creeping on you.”Now that’s a supportive partner.Sharing the couch with Linda and Drew, Jonathan and Zooey gave some insight into their first meeting, which took place in August 2019 when the brothers filmed a sibling-themed episode of Carpool Karaoke with Zooey and her sister, Bones star Emily Deschanel. "I thought I was playing it cool,” said Scott. “I didn't think anything of it. The producer said I was flirting so bad, so hard they had to cut a bunch of that out.” Deschanel confirmed that even with his flirt meter working overtime, Scott never crossed the line. "You were very gentlemanly," said Deschanel.As for the first date, Scott overcorrected and did in fact play it too cool. “When we were going to our first date, I didn’t know it was a date,” said Deschanel. “He said, 'Are you bringing people?' and I was like, 'No, just me.' And then I was like, 'Should I bring people? Should I call my sister?'" said Deschanel. The actress added that Scott’s intentions became even more unclear at the end of their date when he suggested a tour of his house, an offer that seemed like a cover plan to get into a more intimate setting. After seeing every room in the house, Deschanel realized the offer was literal. “At that point I was like, oh my god, he really is just giving me an architectural tour of his house,” said Deschanel, which seems entirely on-brand for one-half of the Property Brothers.

The new couple have found themselves with more free time to watch Deschanel’s work lately while they’ve been isolating together.
