Jimmy Kimmel is one of late night TV’s most beloved talk show hosts, what with his signature chuckle, the way he harangues his guests, his undying love for The Bachelor (*snort*), and how he just refuses to give up on a good joke.  One in particular that's permeated every single episode since Jimmy Kimmel Live’s inception is that he and Matt Damon are mortal enemies. So when Matt’s BFF and life partner Ben Affleck stopped by the show on Tuesday night to talk about a new movie that he’s filming in France with Matt, of course, Jimmy was having none of it.

As soon as Ben sat down to deafening cheers, Jimmy said, “I always feel like I should frisk you to make sure you didn’t bring anybody stupid with you.”

Jimmy is, of course, referencing that infamous Ben Affleck entrance from a few years ago where he snuck Matt Damon onto the show by strapping his fully-grown bestie to his chest and covering him with a trench coat. This was all because Matt isn’t welcome on the show—he's consistently been bumped for time on a long-running gag—and Matt has never been happy about it. He’s found other ways to sneak onto the show, like kidnapping Jimmy and tying him to a chair, and once, he even did the dirty with Jimmy’s then-GF Sarah Silverman (that song is still fire as far as we’re concerned).

But Ben has always been the mediator between these two foes (except for that one time), and as he spoke a bit about working with Matt on the new film, Jimmy had to skew the convo just enough to serve his own purposes.

When Ben admitted he and Matt have been best buddies for nearly 40 years, Jimmy asked, “And in all those years, of all the many, many things, stupid things he’s done, what’s the dumbest thing he’s ever done in your presence?”

Annnd here we go.

Ben then threw it back to high school for a story that truly illuminates how their friendship has evolved over the years. According to Ben, he and Matt grew up on the same street in Boston and because Matt was a couple years older, Ben really looked up to him both figuratively and literally. That is, until Ben was cast in a PBS educational show for kids and Matt was jealous beyond words. “It was enough to make Matt boil with envy! Just like burn with rage!” Affleck said.

Jimmy seemed happy with that, so Ben continued, “When we got to high school...  I went to audition for the play, and I saw Matt there. And he kind of eyed me... I swear to God this is a true story. He walked up to me. He said, ‘Let me give you a little advice.’ I said, ‘Okay great thanks. What’s up?’ He said, ‘This isn’t TV where you get by your looks and your haircut. This is about talent. This is THE THEATRE.’ Turned around and walked away—stone cold.”

Jimmy—ever the investigative journalist—then confirmed with Ben that Mister Matt "Theatre-Actor" Damon has ever done one play in his entire career. “I knew I was right about him the whole time,” Jimmy said smugly.

Oh you boys really need to find a way to solve your differences! We know couples-counselling didn’t work but please, don’t give up on the process.

Long-standing feuds aside, it's great to see Ben out and about looking straight-up joyful again. After some time away from the cameras to focus on his sobriety, he's been vocal recently about his regrets over his divorce from Jennifer Garner and focusing on his kids and his career. We just want good things for him, and it seems like he might be on his way to happiness.
