Jasmine Cephas Jones celebrated making Emmys history with champagne in her bed

Jasmine Cephas Jones has a whole bunch of talented friends rooting for her, but when she made Emmy Awards (watch the full broadcast on CTV.ca) history this month, her celebration was a little quieter than you might expect. While some celebs were hosting extravagant (physically-distanced) parties on Emmys night, Jasmine was cozied up in bed with a glass of bubbly."I was in Budapest," she told etalk. "It was three o'clock in the morning for me. I found out, I screamed. Then my parents FaceTimed me and we kind of opened a bottle of champagne at three in the morning in my bed. During these times, that's kind of a normal way to celebrate."Jasmine and her father, Ron Cephas Jones, made history at this year's Creative Arts Emmys as the first father and daughter duo to win awards in the same year. Jasmine won the award for Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama for her portrayal of Tyisha in #FreeRayshawn (stream now on Quibi) and Ron won Outstanding Guest Actor on a Drama Series for William Hill on This is Us (premiering Oct. 27 on CTV), his second award for the role. It's an amazing and well-earned feat for both, but Jasmine says she doesn't feel she'll truly process it until she can celebrate with her dad in person.
"It's taking a long time to sink in," she said. "We're in kind of a weird moment right now in the world and I can't go out and celebrate with a bunch of people. My dad lives in L.A., so I think it will finally sink in once I actually see him in person and sit down and have a dinner with him and kind of go over how crazy and awesome this all is."Jones shared she's grateful for what the honour could mean for #FreeRayshawn, possibly pushing more audiences toward the important series. The Quibi show, which also stars Stephan James and Laurence Fishburne, deals with the ever-relevant themes of police violence and the systemic targeting of Black people by law enforcement. James plays a man who says he was framed for the crime for which he is being pursued by police and barricades himself in his home with his wife (Jones) and young son. Fishburne is a sympathetic cop who pleads his case.
"It's a story that has been told for years—it's definitely not a different story or the first time it's ever been told," Jasmine said. "I think more people are paying attention because of everything that's arising with this election and this pandemic that we're in. People are really taking more time to look at themselves and the decisions that they make. I just hope it starts a conversation for people that weren't aware of these situations or these horrific things that happen—they become aware, tell their friends or their families and start having these conversations."It may be her award-winning project, but #FreeRayshawn isn't the only boundary-pushing cultural commentary on Jasmine's resume. You may recall she first gained name recognition with the role of Peggy Schuyler in the original Broadway cast of Hamilton. Jasmine hasn't suited up as Peggy for quite a while, but she can now count Lin-Manuel Miranda, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Leslie Odom Jr. and more of the cast as life long friends who still support her from a far."I got a lot of love [from the Hamilton cast]; Phillipa [Soo] tweeted, Leslie Odom Jr. did," she said. "They're all like my family at this point and we're all big fans of each other and we love the work we all do and we all just want to see each other succeed. We all kind of watch each other's work and support each other and we're always texting and trying to keep in touch with each other so when one person wins something, we all kind of win."[video_embed id='1896041']RELATED: Anthony Ramos can't get away from Lin-Manuel Miranda [/video_embed]Her biggest fan though? That would be former co-star, current fiancé, Anthony Ramos. The couple were engaged at the end of 2018 and were supposed to get married this year, but like so many couples, had to postpone."The wedding is going to be next year—it was supposed to be this year, and it's going to be in a different season so we're kind of changing everything that we planned before," Jasmine said. "Anthony and I, we've always supported each other. We met working together so we're each other's biggest fans and we try to support each other any way we can. If he wins, I win; if I win, he wins. It's just great to have a partner in this business that we're in. He's a great, great, great guy with a really big heart."

Jasmine's next project will be the TV spin-off of the 2018 film, Blindspotting, which was written and produced by yet another Hamilton alum, Daveed Diggs.
