Let’s be honest: Greta Gerwig is talented, charming, endearing and a liiiittle bit awkward. You might remember her sweetly kooky characters in
Greenberg or
Frances Ha or
Mistress America, and on Tuesday night, she stopped by
Jimmy Kimmel Live! to talk about awkwardly trying to give direction to Meryl Streep, and also, awkwardly showing up for the Golden Globes two hours early.Awkward.As she tells it, she wasn’t nominated in the director category (in fact, no women directors were *cough**cough*), so she was there to support her partner Noah Baumbach who directed
Marriage Story, which earned him a director nom and several other
Globe nominations. As he was doing the press rounds, she decided to just take her seat in the ballroom, which was empty, BTW. And then just sat there alone.
“I was in this banquet hall with no one there!” she told Kimmel with her signature giggle. “And then I saw all the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press sort of inside and they were like, ‘We voted for you!’ and I was like, ‘Well you didn’t. I didn’t get nominated.’” Wow, good on her, but also, we can hear the crickets from here.
She went on, “I sat there alone and we had a wonderful plant-based meal, and I ate so many people’s soups! They were gonna take them away before people arrived, and I was like, ‘I gotta eat all this soup!’”She went on to talk about directing Meryl Streep in
Little Women, which obvs would be a nerve-wracking endeavour for anyone. She’s Meryl Streep: arguably the
best living actress who could win an Oscar for just blinking on-screen (and we would be here for it). And as Greta described it, when it came to directing Meryl and Saoirse Ronan together, she felt woefully out of place.[video_embed id='1869173']RELATED: 10 looks from the 2020 Golden Globes red carpet we loved[/video_embed]“I was like a parent chaperone at a middle school dance,” she explained. “I was like not the person who needs to be there. I was like, ‘How’s it going guys?! Do you need anyth—Okay! I’ll be over here by the punch! Just, you guys go for it!’”
Little Women has been a critical and commercial hit, it's likely the Oscars will come calling her name this year even if the Globes missed the mark. In Hollywood where glamour and hubris reigns supreme, Greta's endearing charm is what’s needed more around those parts. Because now we just want to watch a 90-minute director's cut of her trying to eat everyone’s soup.[video_embed id='-1']How to get the perfect simple finger waves[/video_embed]
