'Bridgerton' made many viewers swoon over a spoon

Netflix and Shondaland have turned Julia Quinn’s historical romance novels into the runaway hit show Bridgerton. The costume drama/steamy bodice-ripping series, which premiered on Christmas Day, has gifted us with Simon Basset, The Duke of Hastings, played by Regé-Jean Page – a man of many appetites, passions, moods, and broods. And fam, we are here for it. 

Bridgerton follows Daphne, played by Phoebe Dynevor, as she turns of-age to marry in the high-stakes marriage market of London. Her efforts to find a suitable husband that she can both love and also trust with her family’s legacy is helped by Simon when he offers to pretend they are loved-up, thus sparking a bidding war for her hand. And naturally, sparks fly. This To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before meets Poldark has all the fun romantic elements you would hope for – dances, horses, corsets, men with manners – and one element no one could have guessed would have tongues wagging (and drooling): a spoon.

Yes, in one lightning-quick shot, Simon very briefly licks a spoon. We can’t explain it, but the spoon-lick somehow encompasses all of Twitter’s long-held secret fantasies and desires. Fans are posting that they would step over their own mother for just another moment with the spoon. And we can’t lie, we kinda feel the same.

Of course, there is a lot more to this show than just a mere spoon! We would never encourage anyone to objectify a very talented actor, a very subtle and fresh script, a very beautifully-directed and shot piece of cinema!

There is also, uh... the plot. Truth be told, Regé-Jean Page, as far as we can tell, is the plot. And, as they say, the plot thickens.

Okay so perhaps all of the internet (and us included) are in love with the Duke of Hastings. What of it? Like many of the shows that came before it, Bridgerton has sex, gossip, love, and society on the mind – all of the winning qualities that fans looking for their next great binge demand. In fact, some fans noticed they loved the show specifically because it reminded them of some of the great classic watches of yore... like Gossip Girl.

In all honesty, there were some serious ravings and commendations for the colour-blind casting of Bridgerton, offering up a more diverse look at Regency England than has ever been presented before. As early as a few years ago, no one would have ever presented England of Jane Austen’s era with so many Black and people of colour mixing, mingling, and having equal status with white people, but Bridgerton not only blows those stereotypes and conventions out of the water, it doesn’t even bat an eye. It’s like Uhura on Star Trek: it’s not even questioned why she’s there and that she’s on equal footing as the rest. While there are certainly more complex conversations to have about race in the show, we have no choice but to stan!

Okay, so like, when are we getting season 2? We are running out of spoons to lick here!
