Is there any denying that The Masked Singer (Wednesdays at 8pET/PT on CTV) is the feel-good series people need in 2020? Where else can fans escape for an hour of good tunes, colourful costumes, and all the Ken Jeong monologues they can handle? The show brought it once again on Wednesday night’s Group B Playoffs, and even though Baby Alien was unmasked, it was all kinds of chaotic fun.

Joel McHale returns

At this point it’s probably only a matter of time before the former Community frontman is asked on the series in a full-time capacity. He’s guested more than any other celebrity, and his banter is top-notch. His guesses aren’t bad either, but what really set him apart on Wednesday night was his impersonation of Nick Cannon. “Rick Cannon,” as Ken jokingly referred to his former co-star, was dressed just like the host—right down to his sparkly shoes. (Although, as Jenny McCarthy pointed out, Joel’s bling was of the stick-on variety and Nick is 100 per cent pure frosting.) Add in Joel’s impersonation of Robin Thicke last week and, well… if this were a judging audition, McHale would have totally nailed the part. But it wasn’t all about the actor on Wednesday night as there were five Group B performances to dig into: Serpent, Crocodile, Baby Alien, Whatchamacallit and Seahorse. And for the first time all season the judges had no clue who any of them were, despite some extra “childhood clues” that were thrown at them at the end of each performance.[video_embed id='2052719']RELATED: Ken Jeong reveals if there will be a 'Hangover 4'[/video_embed]

Seahorse wows the crowd

Serpent and his croissants kicked off the performances with a soulful rendition of Maren Morris’ “The Bones” and Crocodile gave some serious vibes with his take on Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” But it was Seahorse, who perfectly nailed Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” that gave the crowd goosebumps. Right before the performer sang those opening notes, Nicole Scherzinger promised Joel just how good she is, and she did not disappoint. Even Nick was in awe of the performance. “I’ve been around some incredible vocals in my life and that was one of the best vocals I’ve ever heard,” he said. Cue the Mariah Carey jokes now, Ken. If the audience were voting for a winner at this point, there’s no question Seahorse would take it all. But Wednesday’s episode was sadly about eliminating someone else, and after those three performances it was clear either Whatchamacallit or Baby Alien were going to land in the bottom. Whatchamacallit’s lit performance of Ludacris’ “Money Maker” wasn’t strong vocally by any means, but he brought the personality and the dancing inflatable unicorn costumes, which was fun and mood-setting. It’s hard not to be happy when a giant, colourful ball of hair with one random eyeball is telling you to shake. Unfortunately for Baby Alien though, that left him at the bottom of the pack.

Nicole and Jenny have a new son

The female judges have been joking about adopting Baby Alien since his first performance of “Faith,” and that matronly feeling continued on Wednesday when he performed Imagine Dragons’ “It’s Time.” Vocally it was strong, but the thing is that Baby Alien’s whole shtick is ventriloquism, and that’s always a hit or miss with audiences. This performer was standing in what Joel described as a “giant washing machine” with a “mini football player on top,” and that made it hard for audiences to connect with him. It was also hard for the judges to guess who he was. They thought everyone from Nick Kroll and Jason Biggs to Jeff Dunham and Eric Bana. Top points for sense of humour and fake European accents though, because as it turns out the performer in question was none other than former New York Jets quarterback and current ESPN analyst Mark Sanchez (so not a comedian, like he had everyone believing). He told the judges that he did the show for a gag, but also for his “little man” who now knows the words to “Faith” and Imagine Dragons, thanks to all the practicing they did. “We’ve been rocking out in the car. It’s fun,” he told the crowd before performing one final time. And just like that, Group B is down to four. It will be a while before they’re back though, as five new contestants in Group C—Broccoli, Lips, Squiggly Monster, Mushroom, and Jellyfish—take the stage next week. At this point it still seems like it’s Seahorse’s pool to lose, but then again, with this show you just never know what, or who, will come up next.Watch The Masked Singer Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV.[video_embed id='-1']Before you go: Dog jumps on top of sheep to go for a ride[/video_embed]
