The quarterfinals on
America’s Got Talent: The Champions (Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on CTV) wrapped up on Monday night with three unique groups clinching the final spots for the semi-finals and one lucky dance ensemble earning the Golden Buzzer and moving directly to the finals. While judge Alesha Dixon used her Golden Buzzer power mostly for good (the singer did accidentally hit her X by mistake at one point), fellow judges Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel were not nearly as kind as Dixon and fourth judge Heidi Klum. Instead, the men made their thoughts on dance and singing groups known in the most obnoxious way possible. The sound of an AGT buzzer most be what haunts the dreams of contestants. For the final night of the quarterfinals, Alesha Dixon had the Golden Buzzer power and used it to put forward a group that relied heavily on emotion and great lighting. The Silhouettes were on AGT in Season 11 and were the first dance crew to use shadows and lights to create storytelling with their routines. The group returned on Monday much to the delight of Howie, who said he’s compared every shadow group against the Silhouettes and none have measured up. (Surprisingly, there have actually been a lot of shadow groups.)Maybe it’s because they were the originators, or maybe it’s because they used a storyline that included American patriotism and a dog to appeal to every array of human emotion, but the Silhouettes did enough to earn the Golden Buzzer from Alesha and secure their spot in the finals. It’s like if
This Is Us was a dance routine; prepare for more sobbing in the finals.
Also earning the judges’ love was seven-year-old comedian JJ Pantano. Up against dog/balance duo Christian and Percy, who received Heidi’s vote, and violinist Brian King Joseph, who scored a nod from Alesha, JJ received a vote from Howie and tie-breaker Simon, securing the entertainer’s spot in the semifinals. The young Australian was a finalist on his country’s series and arrived in the United States with the sole purpose of roasting the judges. No complaints here, but it’s tough to imagine that a child delivering jokes that are most likely written by his parents deserves to be in the semifinals over adults who have spent more time than he’s been alive honing their craft.[video_embed id='1877582']Heidi Klum defends 'AGT' and Simon Cowell[/video_embed]He is undeniable cute in that kids-say-the-darndest-thing way, but is that enough to be judged against a woman flipping in the air while blindfolded and landing on a bar? Because that’s what acrobats
Sandou Trio Russian bar are bringing to the semifinals after being voted through by the Superfans.
The group returned after a subpar performance in Season 6 of AGT that involved an upside-down piano and not nearly enough brushes with death. Back for redemption, the trio, or at least Cassie Sandou, put her life on the line, which in this case is a bouncing bar held by her husband and brother-in-law. The men’s roles are likely very difficult, but they pale in comparison to the demands of the woman performing flips without a net. That’s a semifinal-level performance. The last semifinal position went to contortionist Strauss Serpent, who won the Superfan vote thanks to his combination of skill and sheer terror on the part of the viewers. Equal parts impressive and horrifying,
Africa’s Got Talent winner Strauss Serpent has made a career out of reminding viewers that their ability to slightly bend their thumb backwards is actually not impressive.Watch
