Next year is the 25th anniversary of the Clueless, which centres on the life of popular rich girl Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone), as she balanced a charming ditziness and spoiled attitude with friendship, romance and upper-crust high school shenanigans. But another version of it is coming to television—just not in the way we've seen it before. The previous TV incarnation, which premiered in 1996, a year after the movie hit theatres and aired for three seasons, featured much of the same cast, with the exception of Silverstone who was recast with Canadian Rachel Blanchard. And like its big-screen counterpart, it was all about the laughs, with the odd dose of romance. According to Deadline, the newest reboot would be a dramatic mystery where Cher's BFF and sidekick, Dionne (played by Stacey Dash in the film and TV versions), takes centre stage in what is being described as "Mean Girls meets Riverdale meets a Lizzo music video." We're totally buggin'.So, check it. In 2020 L.A. terms, it's being called "a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latté and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when the high school queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong No. 2 Dionne steps into Cher's vacant Air Jordans" all while "unraveling the mystery of what happened to her best friend." The main takeaway? Cher goes missing and it's up to Dionne to figure out what happened to her girl—all while trying to navigate the halls of Bronson Alcott High School (if they're keeping the school's name the same, that is) as the new popular girl in school. Playing second fiddle has been this character's jam so it'll definitely be new territory in a reboot that is straying far from the source material, which itself was loosely based on Jane Austen's Emma. The Gen Z update will be written by Will & Grace's Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey so perhaps we can still expect some humour in the mix. The mystery comes in the form of executive producers Corinne Brinkerhoff (creator of American Gothic and No Tomorrow), as well as executive Tiffany Grant and Robert Lawrence, a producer on the original Clueless movie. It remains to be seen how this series lands but we're with one big question: will Paul Rudd be involved?
