Last year was a rough one for TV lovers and cinephiles. Thanks to six months of Hollywood strikes and delayed productions, some of the shows and movies we were looking forward to were delayed or never got off the ground. Thankfully, that’s all over in 2024. Now that the strikes are officially resolved, art is back in full force.
There are plenty of great new and returning TV shows to dig into in the months ahead. So, when all you want to do is cuddle up and binge something great, you’ve got options. Read on for our most anticipated TV shows of the year.
True Detective: Night Country
Remember when the first season of True Detective (with Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey) took home all the awards? Critics hailed it as a TV masterpiece. It was so great that the next two standalone seasons had a lot to live up to, and weren’t as well received. That all changes in January with Night Country.
The fourth installment received perfect critical scores and tons of accolades ahead of its premiere, with many saying it’s even better than the first season.
This iteration stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives in Alaska who investigate the disappearance of eight men from a research station. This season also features new creative juices through the hiring of showrunner, writer and director Issa López, who is the first person to manage the series other than creator Nic Pizzolatto.
The Regime
We’ve been itching for Kate Winslet’s TV return ever since her jaw-dropping gig in Mare of Easttown (if you haven’t watched it yet, please do so immediately). Thankfully, Winslet is back with this political limited series, and after a first look, we think it’s going to be another juicy journey.
In The Regime, Winslet plays the chancellor of a modern European regime. The story traces one year inside the palace walls as her authority slowly crumbles, with plenty of powerful twists and turns along the way. How twisty will it get? Well, this show hails from the executive producers of Succession, (stream now on Crave) so that should give you an idea.
House of the Dragon (s2)
The Game of Thrones prequel was one of the few productions that was able to continue filming during the strikes, but bringing dragons to life is still a big task. So, there has still been a long wait for new episodes. This summer, fans can finally catch up on the Targaryen happenings though, and trust us when we say there are happenings in store.
The second season delves into the civil war, Dance of tbrihe Dragons, which basically kicked off in the first-season finale with a certain death. The action will be more centered this season as well, with no time jumps or casting changes.
Bridgerton (s3)
Part 1: 16th May, 2024 and Part 2: 13th June, 2024 on Netflix.
It’s Penelope’s time to shine when this period drama returns in 2024, without original cast member Phoebe Dynevor. Instead, Nicola Coughlan’s fan favourite character is at the centre of the romance in Season 3, and she’s done pining for Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after overhearing him insult her last season.
However, finding a husband (especially one who will allow her to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown) will be harder than Penelope thought. Re-enter Colin, who offers to help her in her pursuit of marriage, potentially realizing his own feelings for his “pal” in the process.
Cue the modern music playing in the background of fancy balls.
The Bear (s3)
Coming to Disney+ later this year
This show’s fanbase has grown a lot since 2022 thanks to word of mouth and a slew of Emmy and Golden Globe nominations and wins. Those tense scenes and high stakes have given at least one former chef we know PTSD. Still, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) is as dedicated to his craft as ever in Season 3.
To prepare, White has been spending a lot of time training with professional chefs and getting ready to showcase some of those skills on camera. It was a necessary task, since Season 3 features a return to BEEF, with lots of time in a functioning kitchen atmosphere now that remodelling has wrapped.
The Franchise
Coming to Crave later this year
If you were a fan of Veep and its mockumentary style, gear up for this new comedy from Veep creator Armando Iannucci and Oscar-winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty). The Franchise veers from the White House and into the world of superheroes, and more specifically, those who make them come to life on-screen.
The series stars Billy Magnussen, Jessica Hynes, Darren Goldstein, Lolly Adefope and Isaac Powell as a crew of filmmakers who are trapped making franchise superhero movies. It’s their own personal hell, but one that produces lucrative results. And, we suspect, plenty of laughs.
Hacks (s3)
Coming later to Crave this spring
We learned in season 1 that Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are the comedic duo we never knew we needed, and now that they’re in our lives we can’t wait for more. If you haven’t caught the Emmy-winning series, the first season featured comedy writer Ava Daniels (Einbinder) working with aging standup legend Deborah Vance (Smart) to update her act. In Season 2 they progressed their mentorship on the road with a few more bumps and antics.
The third season will probably see the women part ways, given what went down in the finale, but their chemistry is just too good to keep them apart for long.
The Jinx Part 2
Coming to Crave later this year
The Emmy-winning documentary that brought killer Robert Durst down with a hot mic moment is back eight years later with new evidence and updates. The six-part follow-up includes new information the doc’s investigation team has uncovered since 2015, along with more hidden material, new interviews and phone calls Durst made while in prison.
Durst was convicted for the first degree murder of Susan Berman in 2021 and sentenced to life in prison. He died as a prisoner in hospital in January 2022 after contracting COVID in the fall of 2020.
The Perfect Couple
Coming to Netflix later this year
Murder mysteries are all the rage right now, and Elin Hilderbrand’s bestselling novel The Perfect Couple is a great one to dig into. Luckily for fans, the story is also being adapted into a miniseries starring Nicole Kidman, Eve Hewson, Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Omar Epps and Meghann Fahy.
If you haven’t read the book, it revolves around a high society wedding that goes sideways when a dead body appears on the beach. Suddenly the nuptials turn into an investigation, one in which every larger-than-life character at the celebration is a potential suspect.
Mary & George
Coming to Crave later this year
The current British monarchy isn’t the only world of kings and queens worth dramatizing, and this upcoming miniseries, based on real events, proves it. The psychodrama takes us back to the 1600s and Jacobean England, where seduction and power were powerful weapons.
Mary & George stars Julianne Moore as the Countess of Buckingham, Mary Villiers, who had her son, George Villiers (Nicholas Galitzine), seduce King James VI of Scotland and King James I of England (Tony Curran). The relationship that ensued allowed the Villiers to go from nobodies to the centre of all kinds of political drama, shaking up the monarchy and leading to plenty of wild turns.
