If you needed another reason to get excited for the return of your Thursday night favourites, you just got it. Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 are planning a major crossover event for their returns on September 30th, and from the early looks of things, these episodes are going to be all kinds of epic.
A new trailer hit the internet this week, promising season-finale-levels of shocks, twists and turns. Both episodes pick up on the cliffhanger threads from last year, including Teddy (Kim Raver) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) trying to take their engagement to that next level on Grey’s, and Sullivan (Boris Kodjoe) having to come to terms with his actions at a certain Station 19 wedding.
“You survived the unthinkable. What are you going to do, Meredith?” the trailer opens, with a shot of Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) in the OR, apparently talking to her dead mother, Ellis (Kate Burton), who returns this season. Mer doesn’t answer, but she has a pretty determined look on her face as she walks out of the room.
The trailer then flashes to what looks to be the big event of the premieres: someone steals one of the fire trucks and gets into a massive T-bone crash with an ambulance. Maybe Owen and Teddy won’t be walking down that aisle after all, especially when a fire also breaks loose and threatens all of the stuck passengers.
Chaos, chaos, chaos. Would we expect anything less from the return of two of the most dramatic shows on television? But if only that were all.
The trailer also features an unidentified man being rushed to Grey Sloan on foot, Bishop (Danielle Savre) being reprimanded for insubordination, Bailey (Chandra Wilson) arguing with Webber (James Pickens Jr) and a tough couples therapy session for Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Linc (Chris Carmack).
“Brace yourself… for one heck of a return,” the voiceover promises. Later, it adds, “Someone from Meredith’s past comes back.”
Okay, so who could that person possibly be? We already know that Burton is back (she’s in the trailer). The person could be previously announced guest star Peter Gallagher, who plays Ellis’ former colleague. Or they could be talking about Kate Walsh, who also reprises her role as Dr. Addison Montgomery this year. Another guess is Abigail Spencer, who returns as Dr. Megan Hunt.
BUT, would they really be referring to someone who was already announced to be returning? Hm.
One working fan theory is that the mystery person could also be Martin Henderson, who played Dr. Riggs. Remember back when he was Meredith’s love interest? He reunited with Megan and they started their own life together, so his return could definitely explain Spencer’s casting. Then again, Megan may only be there for her brother’s wedding?
With Grey’s Anatomy you just never know. And considering how many former cast members came back last season for those beach scenes, anything feels possible at this point. One thing is for sure though: if this is how the shows are kicking off their seasons, they must have some incredible storylines in store.
And more crossovers. We’re always down for more crossovers in this fictional firefighting, life-saving world.
Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy return Thursday, September 30 at 8 and 9 p.m. ET on CTV.
