Ted Lasso is returning for its second season and NGL, we need it yesterday.
The fanbase continues to grow for the series that follows the all-American football coach with a heart of gold as he tries to manage an English football club despite having no soccer coaching experience at all. But it appears that some fans might have taken it a bit too seriously.
Etalk’s Chloe Wilde thinks Ted Lasso might have inspired Canada’s own Ryan Reynolds to follow in his footsteps because the actor and It’s Always Sunny star Rob McElhenney purchased an English football team and they’re going to be creating a docuseries about the entire process. Hmm…sound familiar?
Sudeikis’ costar Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard on the show and helped develop the series, says that the pair shouldn’t “underestimate the manner in which a [group of] supporters will turn on you.”
Hunt said he hopes Reynolds and McElhenney are “taking it seriously.”
“I’m sure they are. They’re both thoughtful guys. Sharp cookies — which is not a term,” Sudeikis added.
“I would say — and I think they do this naturally, knowing Rob a little bit better than I know Ryan. Having worked with Rob — listens more than he talks, especially early on,” Sudeikis said.
He continued: "Seeing the supporters’ reaction to the European Super League and the way that you don’t want to be spoken about in the same way that a lot of those owners were spoken about. There’s plenty of examples out there of what not to do. Just follow that lead.”
Sudeikis added that he’s sure Reynolds and McElhenney are “going to be fine.”
The We're the Millers star has repeatedly said that he plans to end Ted Lasso after three seasons but Chloe was hoping he would change his answer so we could have at least five.
“Who knows! I’m not much of a gambling man except for maybe attempting to make a living in the arts, which isn’t, you know, the most sturdy business in the world,” he said.
“There are a lot of factors there. I don’t know who sent you but I send you back with an empty envelope and that briefcase is filled with phonebooks,” Sudeikis added to his non-answer.
To put the fake coaches to the real test, Sudeikis and Hunt put together a starting lineup based on the Ted Lasso cast to take on Reynolds' and McElhenney's team.
“Putting Hannah [Waddingham] and Juno [Temple] up front as your big and little strike force, I mean that’s great. We’ll get headers in and the ball control by Juno with the low centre of gravity, forget about it. We’d beat A.F.C. Wrexham,” Hunt said.
“Shots fired. Here we go, charity game on the books,” Sudeikis added.
Sudeikis said that he would round out the team with people on the crew he would trust anywhere on the field like their costume designer Jacky Levy who “knows where to find those gaps.”
He did admit that he would probably start on the field and “very quickly end on the sidelines.”
“Hopefully on my own accord. Hopefully not carried off or limping off. The second the ball’s touched just sub out immediately,” Sudeikis added.
