Get your iCarly “Interesting” memes ready! Almost a decade since it went off the air, iCarly is back and ready to pick up right where it left off (but with an ever-so-slight edge).
Miranda Cosgrove has returned as the titular Carly, this time in her mid-20s, who decides to revive her popular web series (which she ended in 2012) with her bestie Freddie (Nathan Kress) and her brother Spencer (Jerry Trainor).
“Welcome to the new iCarly!" she gleefully announces in her show-within-a-show.
Picking up in 2021, the new series follows Carly and crew as they navigate new challenges of love, work, family and ~the internet~ in their 20s. Newcomers to the cast include Laci Mosley as Harper, Carly’s roommate and best friend, and Jaidyn Triplett as Millicent, Freddie’s stepdaughter.
As we see in the trailer, it looks like all that we loved about the original Nickelodeon show is back in the Paramount + reboot. Spencer is still immature, but his wailing baby still makes us laugh. According to Paramount, his fantastical art installations have made him "very wealthy" though he still lives in the old loft (which has been remodeled).
Freddie is living with his mother again (who is as overbearing as ever and ruins his chances at romance at every turn). Even the original theme song is back, catchy as ever.
One major difference? The cast curses now, y'all. This is edgy iCarly.
A noticeable absence however is Carly's best friend, Sam, who was played by Jennette McCurdy in the original. Jennette has retired from acting and therefore declined to appear in the reboot. This absence, along with the addition of Laci Mosley, caused Laci to release a statement earlier this month when she revealed she was suffering racist abuse online by Sam fans.
"I love being Black. I hate how Black people are treated on this planet," she wrote on Twitter and Instagram on May 17th. "I took this role on iCarly because the room is diverse… I was shocked when a celebration of all the hard work we’ve put into making this reboot was overshadowed by the most racism I’ve ever experienced in my life over the course of 72 hours."
She continued: "Racism kills. I can’t beg you to love me or yourselves enough to be kind to people but I can block you and protect my peace… Black is beautiful and no amount of slurs or vitriol you dump online will change that."
The racist online abuse first came to light when Laci posted an Instagram Story about the abuse, which has since expired, but a fan saved the video.
Paramount + rallied behind Laci and issued a statement saying that they stand with the iCarly cast.
“Our company is proud to uphold the values of inclusivity and collaboration, where we work to embrace new and diverse voices, act with care and work together," the statement read. "The upcoming Paramount+ iCarly series is one of many examples of this commitment, and we support our entire cast and crew and stand against all instances of hate and racism."
The new trailer has definitely has tried-and-true iCarly fans showing their support.
iCarly drops June 17th, and if you don’t watch it, you’ll rue the day.
