Jhené Aiko and Saweetie are set to perform on an upcoming TV special hosted by Ken Jeong, and we can only hope they'll give us a live performance of our theme song for, as Saweetie says, the upcoming Pretty B*tch Summer: “Back to the Streets.”
The two queens will be taking the stage to perform on an advocacy special produced by The Asian American Foundation (TAAF), a new organization launched to advance Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) unity and power.
The APPI heritage month celebration, titled “See Us Unite for Change — The Asian American Foundation in service of the AAPI Community,” will also include a performance from Sting and appearances by Daniel Dae Kim, Naomi Osaka, Jeremy Lin, Michelle Kwan and Lisa Ling.
The special will air May 21 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on multiple channels, including MTV, BET and Facebook Watch.
The launch of TAAF is a direct response to the spike in anti-Asian racism and violence all over the world. The TAAF announced that it will also “feature testimonials from leading Asian America public figures, as well as individuals working to enact change on the ground.”
The TV special was announced with TAAF’S See Us Unite campaign, which is designed to expand support for the AAPI community. Many foundations have partnered with TAAF for the campaign and the funds raised will benefit non-profit organizations like Stop APPI Hate and Asian Americans Advancing Justice.
Jhené Aiko, who is part Japanese, has been posting with the #STOPAPPIHATE hashtag and sharing resources and action items since the COVID-related spike in violence against Asian communities began.
In March, the “Triggered” singer wrote, “I am the descendant of Asian and African ancestors. Violence across the Asian American and Black Communities is unacceptable. We stand in solidarity through protecting, educating and telling our stories. #TellOurStories #STOPAPPIHATE.”
She also shared concrete steps and organizations for her followers to “follow, learn from + donate to,” including Stop APPI Hate, Hate is a Virus, Advancing Justice, APPI Women Lead, Asians For Mental Health and more.
