The MTV Movie and TV Awards were Sunday night, and like many award shows over the past year, the format had to be switched up just a smidge, with celebs and stars joining the festivities via video or pre-recording their acceptance speeches.
Safety may be the new sexy, but the show wasn’t light on funny, heartfelt or jaw-dropping moments.
Host Leslie Jones was absolutely loving the gig and obviously spiced it up with her own patented brand of comedy. We have to stan a woman who can take Cardi B’s “Up” choreography and take it three times around the dance floor all while parodying One Night in Miami.
Or how about inserting herself into a steamy bodice-ripping Bridgerton sex scene just so she can have a Zack Snyder cut with Regé-Jean Page? Would 100 per cent do the same.
Of course, with talent like that, she was also a winner, taking home the award for Best Comedic Performance for her role in Coming 2 America. Duh.
Scarlet Johansson, who joined the festivities via video-chat from home, nabbed the Generation Award, and her Saturday Night Live husband Colin Jost decided to interrupt her genuine acceptance speech by dumping a bowl of fluorescent green slime over her head.
Uh, Jost? That’s a Nickelodeon thing, not MTV. (Psst, it’s actually more like a You Can’t Do That On Television thing!).
Sacha Baron Cohen was awarded the prestigious Comedic Genius Award, and instead of appearing himself, he decided to let all of his alter egos do the talking.
Ali G, Borat, Bruno, and yes, even Admiral General Aladeen took to the podium, and it would seem that every version of him had some kind of criticism, much to the audience’s delight.
If that wasn’t enough shock value, perhaps you need TikTok star Addison Rae and Cobra Kai star Tanner Buchanan presenting the iconic Best Kiss award by pulling a Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams.
That’s right, the He’s All That costars snogged each other’s faces off.
Immediately afterwards, when Chase Stokes and Madelyn Cline came up to accept the award for their steamy Outer Banks chemistry, the on-screen-turned-IRL couple (we love to see it) did the very same.
What made it even cuter was it was a rescue-kiss from Madelyn when Chase forgot all the people he wanted to thank. PDA isn’t for everyone, but rescuing your partner from an awkward situation certainly is!
Also, can we just take a moment to appreciate Anthony Mackie using his time up at the podium after he won the award for Best Hero to call out his arch-nemesis Tom Holland?
This is like Ryan Reynold and Hugh Jackman levels of rivalry. Their not-a-feud feud has been going on since 2016, and we can’t wait for Holland’s rebuttal.

Don’t know if you know this, but Elizabeth Olsen and Kathryn Hahn, who accepted WandaVision’s award for Best Show together, should also be winning Most Iconic Duo, Best Fight, and also The Cutest People Ever. Feast your eyes on the cuteness!

With all that fun, there were a few uplifting and heartwarming moments as well, like from To all the Boys author Jenny Han.
When accepting the award for Best Movie TATB: Always and Forever, Han used her time to send love to Asian communities amidst the increase in hate crimes and violence against Asian American and Pacific Islanders communities.
“You've shown so much love for Lara Jean [...], I ask you to keep showing that love for the whole Asian-American community at large,” she said, full of emotion.

The world will never not miss Chadwick Boseman and that was on display once again when the late actor and legend won Best Performance in a Movie for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. When Yara Shahidi announced the win, the entire audience applauded from their feet.

Yara accepted the award on behalf of Boseman, saying “I know I speak for myself, his legion of fans, and the communities he so beautifully represented when I say we are honored to celebrate his art today and every day.”
“His impact is everlasting and we are eternally grateful for the way his presence and his art has changed the world. We love you and we miss you. Thank you,” she finished.
How about the awards recognizing Elliot Page and Trans Rights issues during the Best Performance in a Show category? He may not have won the award, but trans visibility is always important.
The night was definitely filled with a cornucopia of emotions, moments, jaw-droppers, and legendary acts. We don’t know how to summarize it all, so we’ll just leave you with this video of Eric Andre giving the red carpet a leg up.
This is usable footage... and I'm sharing it with Twitter. Thanks, @ericandre! #MTVAwards pic.twitter.com/7RZqyRGjrP
