Last week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy (Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on CTV) brought buckets of joy, from beach reunions we’ve been waiting all season to see to a happy ending for Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and Winston (Anthony Hill) to zero dead patients.
While this week’s episode threatened to kill our buzz several times, the surgeons of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital are keeping the joy train chugging along just a little while longer. No more worst days, okay?
There were no beach scenes this week, but Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) scans do show that she hasn’t experienced any permanent damage from Covid or her coma. Joy!
When she eventually gains enough strength to wake up, she thanks Richard (James Perkins Jr) for making the decision to put her on a ventilator. She is also quick to bust Jo (Camilla Luddington), who confessed to a comatose Meredith that she wants to switch specialties to OB/GYN. Maybe a better use of her energy would have been to ask about her kids? We’ll assume that came shortly after ratting out Jo.
Meredith waking up doesn’t seem to be as big a cause for celebration as we thought it would be, which may be because Richard doesn’t think she’s strong enough to stay awake for longer than a few minutes. So, the MerDer watch continues.
As for the people who are currently raising Meredith’s children while she takes an extended nap, Link (Chris Carmack) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) have run out of patience and clean laundry.
Thankfully, Link’s parents and their very nice camper arrive to take all four kids on a day trip. At the insistence of his mother, Link uses the rare opportunity of a quiet house to propose to Amelia. Twice. Both times she yells at him to stop, which isn’t the most romantic proposal story we’ve ever heard (Winston is still in the lead this season).
Amelia worries she’ll be a terrible wife because the stress of the pandemic, coupled with raising a newborn and three kids, plus her sister being in a coma has caused her to think about getting high. Um, yeah, a million stressors all at once will do that.
Link reminds Amelia that the important part of that story is that she hasn’t gotten high. The two will revisit the marriage talk at a later date, which at the rate they’re going for quiet days will probably be at Scout’s college graduation.
Case in point on why you should never rush a walk down the aisle: Miranda (Chandra Wilson), Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Jo treat a pair of newlyweds who got into a car accident only hours after saying "I do."
While being rescued by firefighters, the wife asked to be saved first, adding that no one would miss her husband. What happened to "in sickness and in health and in the jaws of life"?
Miranda tries to convince the husband to give his wife a second chance and remember who she was when they met, but instead that gave him the clarity he needed to ask for an annulment. TBD on whether they still get to keep the wedding gifts.
Miranda’s words did help save one relationship, with Owen remembering that Teddy (Kim Raver) has always been there for him (aside from that one wedding day blip). Her affair with Tom (Greg Germann) was completely out of character and instead of holding onto anger, Owen finally realized that Teddy was going through something traumatic. He decides to extend a peace offering of friendship. Yes, Owen! Growth!
Hayes (Richard Flood) threatened to once again snatch some joy this episode when a 14-month-old patient returned to the hospital in need of a heart transplant.
Having already been through multiple surgeries, Maggie doesn’t believe there is anything the team can do for the toddler, but Hayes is not ready to let a little devastating diagnosis steal his joy. Instead, he proposes a risky surgery that will buy the toddler more time until a heart transplant becomes available.
The surgery works, the boy’s father finally gets to cry happy tears, and we see Hayes smile not once, but twice. He has teeth! Who knew?
The Covid vaccine has yet to arrive in the world of Grey’s Anatomy and testing is still very much part of the hospital’s daily routine. Jackson (Jesse Williams) and Schmidt (Jake Borelli) have taken over the testing tent and when several patients test positive, the pair use Jackson’s personal credit card to book them hotels so they can safely quarantine away from family.
Dr. Mama Ortiz (Lisa Vidal) sees a big hole in Jackson’s rich savior plan. His hotel rooms are making it impossible for an organization that helps people in low-income communities book hotels at a discounted rate. As a former social worker, Dr. Ortiz is tired of seeing people like Jackson open their wallet for a band-aid solution and then go back to ignoring communities in need.
Instead of reprimanding Dr. Ortiz for speaking harshly to her attending, Jackson smartly decides that his bank account and her expertise should team up. We knew we liked Dr. Mama Ortiz. Great job, Deluca. RIP.
As for next week’s episode, a shocked Miranda has fans thinking that Derek is alive. Wait, what? Is it Thursday yet?
