If demons are just fallen angels, then what does that make Waverly? That’s the question at the heart of this week’s episode of Wynonna Earp (Fridays at 10pET on CTV Sci-Fi) in which a lifelong enemy, once thought dead, reemerges to create chaos for the Earp sisters. Welcome back, Jolene.

When Waverly’s secret meet-up with Doc is crashed by a pair of hungry demons (BBD has stopped all incoming supply shipments to the Ghost River Triangle), Wav is chased into the fog and winds up in a very Cabin In The Woods-type situation. This particular cabin is haunted by none other than Jolene, the demon who’s been trying to kill Waverly since she was a baby.

We’d all believed Jolene to be dead and gone but when Wynonna took out Bulshar, a loophole opened up for her return. With Waverly in her clutches, Jolene begins to gaslight the hell out of the youngest Earp sister, leading Wavs to question her own identity and her role in what’s happened to Wynonna.

For her part, Wynonna’s been stuck in a cycle of drinking, demon-hunting, and passing out — with the occasional crop top change to keep things interesting. When Waverly and Nicole try to intervene, Wynonna lashes out, leaving Peacemaker in the hands of her sister. Which is how the gun ends up separated from Wynonna and lost in the mind-wiping fog.

Intent on rescue, Nicole, Rachel, and Wynonna enlist Casey to help go after Waverly. It doesn’t go well. (RIP Casey, Purgatory’s next chili cook-off just won’t be the same without you.) Having realized that Jolene is far too powerful for them to take on alone, Wynonna heads to BBD HQ to enlist some backup.

That also goes badly. BBD has decided to abandon Purgatory as a lost cause. They’ve tried to stop the fog and they’ve failed. Because Jeremy objected to the troop drawdown, he’s been thrown in the “food pen.”

BBD isn’t leaving the Ghost River Triangle before they’ve rounded up a Noah’s Ark of demon taxonomy and at this point, those demons are hangry.

But Black Badge’s new top guy likes Wynonna and he’s willing to let her choose one ally from the food pen to help her get her sister back. The obvious choice seems to be between Jeremy and Doc, but Wynonna chooses Cleo Clanton (now that she’s the Clanton heir, it’s Cleo who controls the Reapers).

Blatantly lying to Rachel, Wynonna leashes up Billy to go in after Jolene. That, too, goes badly. Jolene dispatches with both of them, barely lifting a finger to do it.

Seeing Jolene attack Wynonna seems to break something in Waverly, who until then had been tolerating the psychological and physical torture she was under quite well.

Rising up, she takes a stand against her tormentor, her face contorting into a most unangelic visage. With a flick of her wrist, Waverly kills Jolene — but not before Jolene managed to unleash something dark and powerful inside of Waverly.

Outside of the fog, Wynonna dusts herself off in time to see her little sister emerge… with wings and a message: “Your journey is over, Wynonna Earp,” she says, “and mine has just begun.”
