Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are teaming up professionally to bring their outsized personalities to a novel small-screen endeavour: hosting, producing, and even competing in a new game show for NBC. Based on a series of skits the husband and wife duo did for Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime talk show, Bell and Shepard are set to host Family Game Fight, a competition that promises to be as funny and quirky as both Bell and Shepard are themselves.
For the couple, who’ve been extremely open and honest about the highs and lows of pandemic life, the announcement of a new project couldn’t have come at a better time. From what we’ve seen of their respective Instagram feeds, they’re feeling as loopy as the rest of us are under lockdown (see: Exhibit A and Exhibit B).
According to Deadline, the ten-episode show “will test brains, brawn and family bonds over the course of an hour [and] will see Bell and Shepard be adopted into a family of four as they compete in a series of games with a big cash prize up for grabs.”
The Good Place star and her podcasting husband are no strangers to game night. “For one of our first dates, I invited Dax over for a game night at my house with a bunch of friends,” Bell said in a press release announcing the new series. “He said he fell in love with me there because I was a very tiny person bossing everyone around. I fell in love with him too because he’s a very large person who could boss everyone around, but chooses not to. I’m so excited to host Family Game Fight and play all day with my best friend.”
Nor are the pair disused to working together to win in high-pressure situations. Watch as they play to win money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation in a rousing (and messy and hilarious) game of Taste Buds, moderated by Ellen:
In the same release, Shepard weighed in to add that “Kristen is my favorite human to work with. She’s the most consistently funny, playful and joyful scene partner I’ve ever had. She’s also incredibly fun to look at.”
According to Jenny Groom, one of NBC’s Executive VP’s, the network has been wanting to roll the dice on a Bell and Shepard series for years. “Their energy is infectious, their comedic sensibility comes so naturally, and their transparency about their relationship is what makes them so relatable and lovable. Family Game Fight,” she adds, “was born out of the true competitive, yet playful and loving spirit Dax and Kristen have towards each other.”
