June may actually make it to Canada in 'The Handmaid's Tale' S4 trailer

Or at least *some* Gilead survivors do.

We have been sent a good trailer. And we receive it with joy. No seriously, the trailer for the fourth season of The Handmaid’s Tale starring the effervescent Elisabeth Moss has just dropped, and hoo-boy, there is a lot to unpack here. Looks like Moss’s character June has a lot to contend with when the season premieres with two back-to-back episodes April 28th on CTV Drama Channel.

But a big character joins June this season, and it’s so big, it’s technically the world’s second-largest landmass. That’s right, Canada seems to have a huge presence in season 4. In fact, it seems like June has fled Gilead and made it over the border to Canada for asylum.

If you recall, June has been trying to escape to Canada for quite a while but ended up sacrificing her own freedom at the end of season 3 to save a plane full of 86 Canada-bound children instead. True hero stuff.

It looks like in the S4 trailer, not only do we learn that the children June rescued have “landed at Pearson,” (meaning Pearson International, Toronto’s international airport), but June might be making it there too... eventually.

As the trailer begins, we hear a voiceover questioning June, “Miss Osbourne, if you were returned to Gilead, would you be subject to danger of torture, a risk to your life or a risk of cruel treatment or punishment?" You might remember this is the very same question posed to Emily (Alexis Bledel) when she made it to the Canadian border with baby Nichole.

Clearly a good chunk of season 4 must take place right here in our home and native land if the maple leaf imagery is to be believed. We see some giant Canadian flags at the airport and later in the trailer, we see the waving maple leaf again as it soars outside the Royal York hotel in downtown Toronto. So did June leave Hannah behind and make it to freedom?

It’s hard to say exactly what's going on because the trailer is full of haunting, nail-biting scenes that will stick with you long after it ends. We see Gilead descend into chaos, June dodging mortar bombs, someone is pushed off a roof, Serena has been captured, and someone is choking the life out of Aunt Lydia (we ain’t mad).

But most haunting of all, we see little Hannah imprisoned in a glass cage. The brief glimpse we get of her is enough to break the heart in two. All June wanted was to save her!

The Marthas tell Nick (Max Minghella) that he’s better off without her, and then we see that June is basically “public enemy no.1” in Gilead.

Luckily, “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” That’s right, June won’t go down without a fight, and vows, “to hurt them the way we hurt.”

It also seems Nick can’t forget about June, but their relationship comes at a great cost. And as for June, the trailer abruptly ends when she announces, “I ask for justice.”

Gah, all of this looks incredible, and now April 28th seems an incredibly long time to wait all of a sudden. The Toronto-shot series had to massively delay filming the fourth season because of the pandemic, but Elisabeth Moss, who has always been the star and producer, now also steps into the director’s chair this season. Blessed be the fruit!
