He was a fan favourite for seven seasons on The Walking Dead. She’s a Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Wife. Together they’ve got BEEF. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong are joining the newly announced but already anticipated dramedy BEEF, and so far, the series seems to be quite the rage with Hollywood execs (and people who like TV).
Road rage, that is. BEEF hails from creator Lee Sung Jin and features two people who let a road rage incident get the best of them. Slowly but surely the incident festers in their minds until it consumes every waking (and maybe even sleeping) thought and action. In addition to starring in the leading roles, Yeun and Wong are also executive producing.
According to Deadline, the project was only pitched earlier this month, but executives across all of the major streaming sites (Amazon, Apple TV) plus FX were interested in it, and there was a bidding war to acquire rights. In the end, the 10-episode project landed on Netflix, probably costing them a giant pile of money in the process.
Lee Sung Jin’s experience on series like Dave, Silicon Valley and Undone certainly helped sell the show’s premise, but the fact that Minari star Yeun—who recently made history by becoming the first Asian-American performer to be nominated in the Oscar’s lead actor category—is also a draw.
As in Wong. The comedian has been killing it on the stand-up circuit, she headlined the buzzy 2019 Netflix film Always Be My Maybe, and last year she was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020. In other words, this TV show is poised to set the streaming service on fire whenever it debuts.
This isn’t the first time Wong and Yeun have teamed up for a project. The duo both voiced characters on Tuca & Bertie (she played Bertie and he played her boyfriend Speckle) back in 2019. Now fans will get to see all of that chemistry in action on a non-animated screen, although at time of press, there are still no character details available.
Here’s hoping that those, or perhaps even a more in-depth show description, are available soon.
