"Awards" continues to be the greatest season for the cast and crew of Schitt’s Creek. After the beloved series went largely unnoticed for its first five seasons, the comedy is making up for lost time with its continued dominance at award shows. On Sunday night, Schitt’s Creek took home two Golden Globe awards (watch the full show on CTV now) for its sixth and final season, including Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for Catherine O’Hara and Best Musical or Comedy TV Series.

The show earned an impressive five Golden Globe nominations this year with all four main cast members receiving acting nods. Eugene Levy was nominated for Best Actor, Annie Murphy was nominated for Best Supporting Actress and show creator and writer Dan Levy was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

O’Hara earned the first award of the night for the show and received some assistance from her husband Bo Welch, who played an applause track after O’Hara’s name was read and later played music to indicate the actor needed to wrap up her speech. If the night hadn’t been plagued by technical Zoom glitches, this would have almost made it feel like the ol’ days of 2019. O’Hara beat out Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant), Elle Fanning (The Great), Jane Levy (Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist), and Lily Collins (Emily in Paris) to win her first Golden Globe.

Thanking the Levy men for creating “an inspiring, funny, beautiful family love story in which they let me wear 100 wigs and speak like an alien," O’Hara spoke about the love between the cast and crew on the little Canadian show that could. "From the first read-through where no one had to fake a laugh, to the final day on set where everyone except me had to hold back the tears, it's an experience I will forever hold dear to my heart, and I'm proud to be part of their family."

Continuing, O’Hara thanked Schitt’s Creek's network supporters. "Thank you, CBC, for making the show in Canada. Thank you, Pop.” Following the onset of the pandemic last spring, viewership of the feel-good show exploded on Netflix, causing the streaming giant to add the final season ahead of schedule. O’Hara thanked the company, saying “While we were sheltering in place, Netflix brought the show around the world."

Dan Levy was the next member of the Schitt’s Creek family to get some virtual time on-air when he accepted the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy. Like O’Hara, Levy also spoke to the closeness of the tight-knit cast and crew, who together helped create a show that has given viewers a soft place to land.

"The incredible work you all did over these past six seasons have taken us to places we never thought possible, and we are so grateful to all of you for it," said Levy of the Schitt’s Creek team. "Thank you to the CBC and Pop TV for making the active choice to keep this show on the air and give it the time and space it needed to grow."

Levy also used his time at the mic to address the recent revelations that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the governing body that votes on the Golden Globes, has no Black members. "This acknowledgement is a lovely vote of confidence in the messages Schitt’s Creek has come to stand for - the idea that inclusion can bring about growth and love to a community," said Levy. "In the spirit of inclusion, I hope this time next year this ceremony reflects the true breadth and diversity of film and television being made today because there is so much more to be celebrated."

Speaking to Vogue earlier this week, Levy said he was adding his voice to the growing demand that the HFPA rectify their lack of diversity in membership. “While I am grateful for any opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our cast and crew, I would be doing the core values of Schitt’s Creek a disservice by not adding my voice to the timely and necessary conversation calling for a more inclusive HFPA,” Levy told Vogue. “One that acknowledges its responsibility as a voting body behind one of the most-watched award ceremonies of the year, and ensures that its membership better reflects the diversity of the world we live in, so that its ceremony can more accurately represent all that this industry has to offer.”

Tonight’s two Golden Globe wins for Schitt’s Creek arrive five months after the show made history at the Emmys when it became the first series ever to sweep in all four major acting categories. In addition to wins for O’Hara, Levy, Levy and Murphy, Schitt’s Creek also won for Best Comedy Series, Best Writing for Dan Levy and Best Directing for Dan Levy and Andrew Cividino.
