The first 2021 episode of Saturday Night Live aired this past weekend with first-time host John Krasinski at the helm. An admitted SNL superfan, he said the long-running sketch comedy show has been his absolute fave since he was 8 years old. As he gave a shout out to his kids, Hazel and Violet, that he shares with wife and movie superstar Emily Blunt, fans in the audience (and when we say fans, we mean Alex Moffat, Ego Nwodim, and Kenan Thompson) had something (or someone) else in mind.

Raising their hands to ask about John’s star-making turn in The Office TV series, they asked him questions like “Where’s Pam?” and suggested John stop working out because “Jim’s soft.” Obviously, fans are still vibing off of Jim and Pam’s epic love-story from the show that went off the air in 2013, much to John’s confusion. After all, he’s the new Jack Ryan!

That’s when Pete Davidson took to the stage to explain that in quarantine, The Office has become a big deal again, and if the fans want him to kiss Pam, he should probably kiss Pam. Seeing as how Jenna Fischer was nowhere to be found, John gave a quick Jim-like look to the camera before grabbing Pete and kissing him like Dunder Mifflin was about to go under. Jim and Pam forever!

This surprise, of course, left a huge mark on SNL’s hardcore audience, prompting a whole range of reactions. First of all, kissing during a pandemic? Maybe not the smartest idea.

Secondly, some fans on Twitter reacted with laughs, but for the most part, Twitter found the gag veered into queerphobic territory.

We have to admit, the gag is a bit dated. Like 1996-ish. Funny enough, later in the show, John was arrested. Not by the comedy police, but by the FBI for participating in the US Capitol Hill insurrection. Perhaps it was a sketch to make up for the opening monologue.

When the FBI asks if he’s the fugitive they’re looking for, he says, “Yes, or QDaddy on Facebook.”

As he leaves with the officer, he picks up the lectern of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which was famously carried out during the riot.

"Good day, all!” he cries as he exits stage right.

And to all a good night.
