When we last heard from actress and author Jenny Slate in December, she revealed she was *surprise surprise* nine months pregnant with her fiancé Ben Shattuck. We suppose it was really easy for her to keep her pregnancy under wraps seeing as how *gestures at everything* the pandemic has forced us all indoors for nearly a year. But now, lo and behold, another surprise this way comes from the Slate-Shattuck abode. They had the baby six weeks ago! It’s a girl!
“We named her Ida!” Jenny said Wednesday night as the guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! after Jimmy asked if she named her baby AstraZeneca due to the pandemic (we wouldn’t put it past her).
“We don't have any family members named Ida,” she continued, “but we did kind of like look into our heritage and my side of the family is like Jewish people from all over the place. One of the places is Eastern Europe and we were looking at some eastern European names. We didn't go with this but one name that we were both obsessed with was spelled b-a-g-r-a-t.”
Oh dear.
“While I was pregnant we just kept calling her Bagrat which I’m sure is not how you pronounce it. I’m sure it’s more beautiful than me being like, ‘Hey Bagrat you made me throw up again!’” she continued.
Apologies to all our Bagrat-named readers. Jenny, who also sent in a cardboard cut-out of herself for Jimmy to place in the studio (“Face to face just sort of makes everything feel a little less bizarre!”), admitted that her pandemic birthing experience was a bit odd, but luckily fiancé Ben was allowed in the delivery room.
“We had our masks on and everything and that's good because I was making a lot of faces that I might not want him to remember later!” she said as Jimmy and in-studio audience laughed. “But it was like a totally extreme experience during which I completely lost any filter that I might have already had left. After I had the baby it was like, ‘Oh the baby's out! She's here!’ and I just was like, ‘Did my vagina rip in half?’”

That’s the Jenny we know and love, folks. After Jimmy composed himself from the hysterics, Jenny (whose animated sitcom The Great North, from Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard premieres on Valentine’s Day) continued to make everyone laugh as she revealed the worst Valentine’s Day gift she ever received.
“On Valentine's Day, my boyfriend at the time gave me his old and used digital camera,” she mused. “And he gave it to me in like a sock. He put it inside of a sock. That's how we wrapped it.”
But wait, there’s more. She added, “He was like, ‘Here, happy Valentine's Day! Here's this digital camera that I didn't even clear the card from!’ So on it are just a lot of pictures that I thought were important. And then our activity during the day was to go, and he bought himself a new camera.”
Wow, an old camera in a sock. That gift truly socks.
