While Sunday's "big game" had some pretty major Can-con, Saturday night kicked off the weekend's Canadian festivities with a pretty big event of its own. Twenty-one hours before The Weeknd took the Super Bowl field, Dan Levy (star/writer/creator of the multiple-Emmy winning show Schitt’s Creek) took the Saturday Night Live stage for his first time hosting the show.
ICYMI: "Dan Levy" was trending on Twitter for approximately 12 hours before the broadcast even started with people tweeting how PUMPED they were to see the Canadian's hosting debut. Now, that's what happens when you have an entire country rooting for you. Dad Eugene Levy was so excited for his son, he actually tagged along for the ride.
Over 40 years ago, Eugene Levy starred in one of most popular sketch comedy shows to come out of Canada (and, like, ever), SCTV. Although some of his cast mates like Martin Short made the leap to Saturday Night Live cast member, he never did. But all of that came full circle on Saturday when Eugene moved heaven and earth to make sure was there to support his boy. Even if it meant spending the show in an isolation box.
For those who don’t know, the isolation box is kind of like a penalty box in hockey, except instead of receiving two minutes for high sticking, you get two weeks for travelling during a global pandemic. They’re tough rules but fair. As Dan took the stage at studio 8H for his monologue, he tried to chat one-on-one with the audience but SNL’s safety operator Doreen (Aidy Bryant) put a two-metre-long pool noodle between him and the audience. So we think it’s safe to say Doreen had something to do with Eugene ending up in a box.

“I’ve been treated so well, and I just feel so safe!” Dan exclaimed. “Honestly, just to get to walk these halls is such a thrill, oh wait, dad? You came all the way from Los Angeles?”
“Son!” Eugene exclaimed in the box, flanked by two hazmat-wearing guards. “Look at you! I flew in to wish you luck tonight, but because I traveled, I’m now in this isolation box!”
Did he want to watch his son from a box? No. Did he know about the box ahead of time? Also no. But jokes aside, Eugene was actually caught backstage furiously clapping for his son as he opened the show. So wholesome and *ahem* levy-tating. Thank you.
It was definitely a full family affair, because Dan’s mother Deb made sure to tweet about the big night by giving a big middle finger to Dan’s teenage camp bullies.
Deb wasn’t alone. Lots of celebs and fans were chiming in to show their love of Dan’s big night.
Even Prime Minister Trudeau got in on the love-fest.
We’re pretty sure this is all the endorsement Dan needs to become the next Governor General.
During the episode, on top of Dan’s many sketches, the one that seemed to resonate the most was a spoof on the "It Gets Better" commercials aimed at LGBTQ youth.
In conclusion: Canada had a pretty big weekend, eh? (Sorry.)
