Cardi B is having an incredible year, with “WAP” going straight to number one on Rolling Stone’s Hot 100 and dominating the charts and headlines last summer, and now she’s riding high on that wave with “Up,” which was released last week and has already set tongues wagging.
Cardi is no stranger to controversy or pushing people’s buttons, so we should have expected that when she was asked about the meaning behind “Up” and the colourful music video that goes with it, she would give an answer that raises some eyebrows, and renders us speechless.
As a virtual guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (weeknights at 11:30pET on CTV) last night, Jimmy was of course wondering about the catchy hook in “Up” that goes, “If it’s up then it’s stuck.” Is that about beefing? People you shouldn’t be messing with? It is… sexy? Spoiler alert: according to Ms. Belcalis Almánzar, the Offset-inspired line is about, er, bowel movements.
“Have you ever taken a poop and it won’t come out? It’s just up there and it’s stuck?” she explained very matter-of-factly. “Yeah.”
Normally at this juncture, we would say that the audience’s laughter was sorely missed, but Jimmy somehow fills that void with uncomfortable non-acknowledgement. He just CANNOT DEAL. So he pretends to look for something in his desk and doesn’t even flinch.
It’s okay, Jimbo. Like the famous Tarō Gomi books says, everybody poops!

In any case, Jimmy felt way more comfortable asking her about filming the music video for “Up,” which was done during COVID (obvi) but subject to strict regulations.
"There's certain things that you can't do," Cardi explained about the filming process. "I did this pyramid with some girls. And the pyramid, we had to do it in less than 10 seconds because it was more than six people. And due to COVID, people can't be touching."
"Even though you get tested before the music video three times -- you get tested the beginning of the week, the day before, and the day of."
But of course that begs the question, why then were the dancers and Cardi allowed to kiss and lick each other?
"We had to, like, beg," Cardi laughed, adding that the kissing scene only had five women whereas the pyramid had 10 women. That logic isn’t exactly flawless but protocols are protocols.
"[There] cannot more than 10 people in a room," she went on. "It's just the craziest protocols. If you work in production, you understand it's the craziest thing ever."
Well, that definition behind the “Up” lyrics is pretty bonkers, but sure.
