If you've ever had the thought that Ariana Grande seems like a magical fairy person come down to earth to spread joy and solid bops, you wouldn't be alone. In fact, an entire generation of fictional children under the age of five are probably thinking the same thing right about now after the singer appeared on Jim Carrey's dark comedy Kidding this week. You know, when we were growing up, we never had anyone like Ariana Grande appear on The Polka Dot Door or The Friendly Giant. At least now we get to make new memories with her appearance on this very-much-for-adults show, which is a dark look at the life of the host of a children’s program.  If you’re expecting Jim Carrey’s signature slapstick, you will be disappointed (at first), but very quickly you’ll be taken in by the universal themes of mourning, healing, hope, and all of the absurdist segments and surreal moments that pepper the show. Case in point: Ariana showing up as a pickle fairy to save the day with her angelic voice. And pickle wings, naturally. Why a pickle fairy, you ask? First of all, pickles are delicious and a zesty treat. Duh. Secondly, Jim Carrey plays a former children’s show host named Mr. Pickles, so really, a pickle fairy is just what the doctor ordered. As she descends upon the world of Kidding, wearing bread n’ butter pickle wings, a dill-coloured dress and wielding a wand made out of gherkins, she sings to Mr. Pickles (and his hand puppet) an ethereally beautiful song about never giving up even after a failure. “Maybe getting back up again is what falls are for,” she harmonizes with Mr. Pickles as he stares up at her with eyes as wide as the sun.  We look at her like that all the time, so we feel ya, Mr. Pickles.Ariana's appearance on Carrey's show was no accident. Apparently the two have been fans of each other for a long time, but this only came to light a few months back when she tweeted a series of posts about mental health, depression, and self-care, including one photo that contained a Jim Carrey quote that resonated with her. Ariana has been very open about her struggles, especially after the Manchester arena bombing attack where 19 concert-goers were killed. She later deleted the tweets (fans captured them before they disappeared), but not before Jim Carrey saw them and responded to her with love, admiration, and appreciation. And thus, the greatest friendship and collaboration that exclusively revolves around pickles was born.
