After years of speculation, Harry Styles has finally confirmed that his 2019 song “Watermelon Sugar” is about exactly what fans had previously guessed. During his Love On Tour concert stop in Nashville on October 1, Styles admitted that yes, the song is in reference to the female orgasm. We stan a popstar who can put pen to paper about female pleasure.
Styles has been taking breaks during his recent tour dates to chat with the crowd, giving sound dating advice, helping couples do non-fatal gender reveals (goodbye fireworks, we don’t miss you) and congratulating fans on getting engaged mid-concert.
On Friday, Styles’ mid-concert chat included the British singer admitting that the inspiration behind his Fine Line single was multifaceted, just like women. We are complex and layered creatures.
"It doesn't really matter what it's about," Styles told the Nashville crowd. "It's about the sweetness of life.” Continuing, Styles said "It's also about the female orgasm but that's totally different, it's not really relevant." Oh, it’s relevant.
Fans were understandably excited that Styles finally confirmed the heavily rumoured inspiration behind the Grammy-winning single. If anything deserves an award, it’s female pleasure.
Styles has previously been asked about the inspiration behind the summery single, playing coy with Beats 1 host Zane Lowe back in 2019 when Fine Line was first released.
Lowe asked Styles whether the lyrics were inspired by oral sex and “the joys of mutually appreciated oral pleasure.” Sidestepping the question, Styles responded “Is that what it’s about? I don’t know.” Oh, he knew. We all knew.
Speculation around the song’s inspiration increased when Styles released the music video for “Watermelon Sugar” in May 2020. Styles dedicated the video to "touching," which, at the time, seemed more like a nod to the social-distancing taking place during the ongoing pandemic. Now we know that the double entendre was in full effect.
Working with Bradley & Pablo, the video was set on the beach in Malibu and featured the former One Direction member enjoying a day in the sand with a large group of men and women in bathing suits. Their food of choice? Watermelon slices. RIP, eggplant and peach emojis.
