At midnight, Lil Nas X dropped his debut LP “Montero” and he’s also gifted us a few new music videos, including one for his poppy-upbeat tune “That’s What I Want,” and it has already sent fans on Twitter into a headspin.
Directed by Stillz, LNX stars as a football all-star who has a steamy affair with his teammate in the locker room after he’s injured. The safe-sex encounter (yup, there’s a shot of a condom!) is followed up by a romantic Brokeback Mountain-esque country romp in the tent. First Call Me By Your Name, now Brokeback. The movie references are too much!
When he shows up at his lover’s house with a bouquet and high hopes, his dreams are dashed when he discovers the man has a wife and kid. So he dresses in his now infamous wedding gown to a chapel, where Minister Billy Porter is presiding, to marry his guitar.
The song that has a veritable “Hey Ya” by Outkast vibe to it has some catchy-earworm lyrics like, “Need a boy who can cuddle with me all night/ Keep me warm, love me long, be my sunlight,” and the anthemic chorus, “I want, someone to love me/ I need, someone who needs me/ 'Cause it don't feel right when it's late at night/ And it's just me in my dreams/ So I want, someone to love/That’s what I f***in want!”
Some other videos dropped at midnight on his official YouTube channel, most of them are just the official audio of his tracks with some remaindered CGI used for the visuals, but there are a few easter egg videos in there.
For example, did you know he has his own talk show now? *wink wink*
The LP contains some of his already-released chart-topping tracks like the eponymous “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”, “Sun Goes Down,” and “Industry Baby,” but it also contains some new vibrant bangers with some big-name collabs, like Miley Cyrus (“Am I Dreaming”) Megan Thee Stallion (“Dolla Sign Slime”), Doja Cat (“Scoop”) and even the legendary Elton John (“One of Me”).
Also, LNX working with both Billy Ray Cyrus and Miley? It’s a family affair.
Although LNX (real name Montero Lamar Hill) had already released an EP in 2019, he is veritably everywhere with his unabashed and unashamed brand of music that explores his sexuality and life story through a fun blend of rap, pop and R&B rhythms.
He has had a banger year, with the title track breaking the internet for giving Satan a lap-dance, his SNL musical guest appearance raising eyebrows for splitting pants, his very tongue-in-cheek pregnancy announcement, his wild VMA performance, and his fire lewks at the Met Gala.
Yes, LNX has finally given birth. “And it’s already Grammy nominated!”
