Drake is always doing big things and as we patiently wait for Certified Lover Boy, it looks like we have something else to look forward to. Later this month, Drake is set to receive the prestigious Artist of the Decade Award at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 23 (watch at 8pET on CTV).
The record-breaking Canadian superstar holds the title for the most Billboard Music Awards with 27. He took home 12 awards in 2019 alone.
“After first appearing on Billboard charts in 2009, Drake banked nine Billboard 200 No. 1s in the 2010s, first leading with his debut 2010 studio LP, Thank Me Later, and most recently reigning with 2019’s Care Package. He also scored six Hot 100 No. 1s in that span,” the outlet noted, adding that no other artist has scored more Top 10 hits or had more Hot 100 entries than Champagne Papi himself.
During the 2010s, Drake has had 33 top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Taylor Swift is the nearest runner-up for the award, with 23 BBMAs to her name.
According to the outlet, Billboard’s Artist of the Decade category ranks the best-performing artists based on the activity on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart and the Billboard 200 albums tally, as well as touring revenue and social media data, from Dec. 5, 2009, through Sept. 28, 2019.
Previous Artist of the Decade winners include Eminem, who won for the 2000s, and Mariah Carey, who won for the 1990s.
Drake fans everywhere celebrated the announcement on Twitter.
Drake could make history at this year's award show by breaking his own record. He's nominated in seven categories, including, Top Artist, Top Male Artist and Top Streaming Songs Artist.
Pink was previously announced as this year's recipient of the Icon Award, which is a career achievement given out annually since 2011. She and The Weeknd are the only performers announced so far but we have our fingers crossed that Drake will join that list.
