If you have a beating heart, then you've likely heard Olivia Rodrigo's hit song "driver's license" some time in the last few months. It broke a few records, including Spotify's most streams of a song in a single week and in a day, becoming Amazon Music's biggest first week streaming debut ever globally, and spending its first eight weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Riding that high, Rodrigo released her second single, "déja vu," on Thursday morning, along with a pastel-hued music video. She also announced that her first album will be dropping on May 21 – mark your calendars.
While her first single was all about losing her partner to his new girlfriend, this one follows a similar narrative, except Rodrigo is a lot more focused on the woman rather than the ex.
The video sees her driving along the California coast, seemingly watching her – maybe even falling in love with her – and soon imitating not only her style but her mannerisms.
It's an interesting reversal on the song's theme itself, which has Rodrigo noting how her ex just transfers everything he shared with her over to his new girlfriend.
In a recent interview with American Songwriter, Rodrigo explained, “I thought it’d be interesting to write a song, using déja vu, about how sometimes when somebody moves on in a relationship and they get with a new partner, you watch it and you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, that was all of the stuff that I did.' I think that’s a really relatable, universal thing."
On the track, Rodrigo sings, "Car rides to Malibu, strawberry ice cream, one spoon for two, and trading jackets. Laughing 'bout how small it looks on you, watching reruns of Glee ... So when you gonna tell her that we did that too? ... Do you get déja vu when she's with you?"
Suffice to say, if you loved her debut, you'll love Rodrigo's new single.
You're probably also relieved to know this is why she cleared all of her Instagram posts over the weekend, now with the song's premiere her main focus, and with a few old posts filtered back in.
"My new song déja vu is out Thursday at 9am pst," she tweeted on March 29. "I promise it's not an April fools joke lol."
What a relief!
