Drake may have been forced to delay the release of his sixth studio album Certified Lover Boy back in January, but the rapper isn’t leaving fans without new music. After teasing the release this week on Instagram, Drake dropped the Scary Hours 2 EP, which included three new songs and a Toronto-centric music video.
Scary Hours 2 picks up where 2018’s Scary Hours EP left off, with the short collection including “Diplomatic Immunity” and the massively successful “God’s Plan.” Drake’s latest release includes three new tracks and features from Rick Ross and Lil Baby.
Drake teamed up with Ross for the deeply personal “Lemon Pepper Freestyle,” which includes bars about the rapper’s young son Adonis (“Flooded French Immersion with the Secret Service”) and his love for his friends who have been with him since the beginning of his career (aka when he started from the bottom). On “Wants and Needs,” Drake and Lil Baby bring the bravado for a song that focuses on the high moments of their careers and what their celebrity has brought to their personal lives.
Scary Hours 2 kicks off with a solo Drake on “What’s Next,” which also received the music video treatment. Drizzy was recently spotted at home in T.O. filming the video and dropped the Theo Skurda-directed clip on Thursday night, which acts as a tour of Toronto.
The video opens with a group of women posing in the snow while keeping warm in Nocta puffer jackets, which are from Nike and Drake’s recent collaboration. “What’s Next” once again finds Drake back on top of the CN Tower, this time standing on the edge of the building while overlooking the city. Drizzy later takes in the lights at Yonge and Dundas, rides the TTC, enjoys a walking tour of Ripley’s Aquarium and finishes his trip home with the quintessential Toronto past time of driving through snow under the Gardiner Expressway.
In addition to releasing Scary Hours 2 on Thursday night, Drake also relaunched his OVO Sounds Radio, moving the show from Apple Music to Sirius XM. Creating the show with Oliver El-Khatib and Noah “40” Shebib, Drake revealed on March 4 that in addition to the return of OVO Sounds Radio after a three-year hiatus, SiriusXM will now feature Sound 42, a 24-hour channel that will play music and interviews by OVO artists.
Drake isn’t the only major Canadian artist to debut new music this week. Just a few hours after Drizzy released Scary Hours 2 and the music video for “What’s Next,” Justin Bieber dropped his video and single for “Hold On,” which is currently trending just a few spots behind Drake’s number one spot on YouTube. “Hold On” is the latest single from Bieber’s upcoming sixth studio album Justice, which will also include his previously released singles “Anyone,” “Lonely” featuring Benny Blanco and “Holy” featuring Chance the Rapper.
