In the ultimate match-up of cool, Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak announced on Friday that they've joined forces for a new album called An Evening with Silk Sonic. Rolls of the tongue, doesn't it?
And lucky for us, it's already been recorded, which also explains why the pair seemed to have put their music on pause during the pandemic. While a release date is yet to be confirmed, the first single arrives on March 5.
“We locked in and made an album,” Mars tweeted. “The band’s called Silk Sonic. First song drops next Friday 3/5.”
In what is sure to offer a gorgeous, heat-packed new sound, An Evening with Silk Sonic also features Parliament Funkadelic bassist and funk legend Bootsy Collins as a “special guest host.” He tweeted on Friday, "A Lot of Funked Up Sheet Comin' ur way."
What could be a tastier promise? The album, by the way, was made entirely during quarantine, suggesting we may be able to ride this thing out in a psychedelic haze if we so choose.
The Grammy winners toured together in 2017 in Europe and, according to Pitchfork, the two worked on material at Abbey Road with Disclosure and Nile Rodgers that same year, appearing on Chic's album It's About Time in 2018 soon after.
Mars' last solo album was 2016's 24K Magic, while Paak's was Venture in 2019. But both have been busy guesting on friends' tracks, with Mars joining Ed Sheeran and Chris Stapleton for "Blow," and Cardi B on her track "Please Me," both in 2019. Paak has been particularly active in this department, having put out four of his own stand-alone singles in 2020, including "JEWELZ," "CUT EM IN" and "Lockdown."
With the stylish pair having finally decided to sit down and collaborate, creating the perfectly named An Evening with Silk Sonic, we may have a real summer ahead of us. And it seems the internet is already feeling it.
