Leave it to Taylor Swift’s loyal fanbase to find hidden meaning in, well, everything. By now, Swifties are well known for their investigative efforts, often decoding subtle messaging in Swift’s music that the rest of us missed. And while many past theories have circled around exes of the Miss Americana star, the latest speculation involves Karlie Kloss.
Swift gave her fans a late Christmas gift with the release of the deluxe version of her evermore album — and the best part? It included two bonus tracks, "Right Where You Left Me" and "It’s Time To Go", which both landed on streaming services on Thursday. Naturally, it didn’t take fans long to raise their eyebrows about a very specific line in "It’s Time to Go."
The song features Swift’s familiar, melodic vocals as she describes the moments in life when you know it’s time to give up and walk away (from who, exactly? Well, that’s open to interpretation.) At one point, she sings, “When the words of a sister, come back in whispers, that prove she was not, in fact, what she seemed. Not a twin from your dreams, she's a crook who was caught."
Hmmm, could this be referring to supermodel and former(?) BFF Karlie Kloss? A friendship between the two blondes reportedly bloomed in 2012 when Swift admitted to wanting to bake cookies with Kloss in a Vogue cover story. Apparently, makeup and hair artists had always made comments to Swift about her and Kloss looking alike and, moreover, the likelihood that they would be best friends if they met. In 2013, Swift performed at the Victoria Secret Fashion Show hand-in-hand with Kloss as she strutted down the runway. Later, fans will recall that Kloss became an official member of Swift’s somewhat notorious girl squad (lest we forget the ‘Bad Blood’ music video).
In 2015, Kloss and Swift even shared the cover of Vogue, seemingly eternalizing their famed friendship. But, perhaps, there has been trouble in paradise since. Swifties quickly (or should we say, swiftly...) took to Twitter with theories:
While the rumours haven’t exactly been substantiated, fans have long wondered about the potential demise of Kloss and Swift’s relationship, noting that the pair haven’t been spotted together in years, like they were in the past.
Kloss, for her part, attempted to put these rumours to bed back in 2018 when she said, “Don’t believe everything you read,” during an interview. Later, in '73 Questions with Vogue,' she insisted that she and Swift are still close. Swift inadvertently stoked the flames of this rumour in 2019 when she shared in an essay that, “sometimes when you grow, you outgrow relationships, and leave behind friendships along the way.” Also worth noting… Swift was suspiciously absent from both of Kloss’s wedding ceremonies to Joshua Kushner.
We have to admit, the reference to a “twin” from her dreams seems a little too on the nose in this context. Are Swifties on to something? Could "It’s Time to Go" really be about Swift’s relationship with Kloss?
Of course, this isn’t the only reason Karlie Kloss made headlines today. ICYMI the supermodel made a rare comment about her in-laws, Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, on Twitter Wednesday night, revealing that she's "tried" to get them to accept the election results. Alexa, play "This Is Me Trying."
