If you thought you had a bizarre fever dream that Zach Galifianakis would be playing himself as the painfully awkward host of "Between Two Ferns" in a movie, have we got some news for you: that was totally real.
Between Two Ferns: The Movie now has a trailer, proving once and for all that it's totally legit, if not also impossibly silly in the best way imaginable. In the trailer for the movie, directed by
Scott Aukerman, Zach hosts a series of A-list guests between his infamous ferns, nearly kills Matthew McConaughey, runs his car into several different landmarks and gets hit on by Chrissy Teigen. All those items sound like they should be the inciting incidents in their own distinct movies, but knowing Galifianakis, we're sure there's some sort of semi-cohesive, fully-hilarious way he's brought them all together.
As far as plot goes, it looks like the awkward celeb interviews are structured around a challenge issued to Galifianakis by a media exec played by Will Ferrell (who technically is Zach's boss so to speak since Ferrell co-founded
Funny or Die). If Zach can create 10 more episodes of the online "Between Two Ferns" series, Ferrell will give him his own real network talk show, which Zach thinks he's wholly entitled to—"I'm a white man and I'm straight; I deserve it." Let the shenanigans and inspirational "we're the misfits" speeches begin! While the concept is wild, the cast list for
Between Two Ferns: The Movie is like the comedy version of
Avengers: Endgame. Not only does it include actual
Endgame alums Brie Larson, Benedict Cumberbatch and Paul Rudd, it's also got John Hamm, David Letterman, Keanu Reeves, Tiffany Haddish, Peter Dinklage, Awkwafina, John Legend and more. It might be more efficient to just list who
isn't in this movie.ICYMI, "Between Two Ferns" started out as a
Funny or Die series starring Galifianakis as a more awkward version of himself and debuted in 2008 with
Michael Cera. Zach would interview celebrities on his simple set (consisting of two chairs and two ferns,
duh), consistently mispronounce their names and ask them outrageous questions no real interviewer would ever get away with. Who else could
look Barack Obama dead in the eye and ask him what it's like to be the last black president? Or call out
2013-era Justin Bieber for his "young punk attitude"? Only a heightened version of Zach Galifianakis.
Between Two Ferns: The Movie drops on Netflix September 20.
