Your first look at the apocalyptic drama
Chaos Walking starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley is here, and the two-plus minute trailer is every bit as chaotic as you’d think. And not necessarily in a bad way.Lionsgate dropped the trailer on November 19, giving fans a first look at the movie based on the opening book of Patrick Ness’ trilogy,
Chaos Walking: The Knife of Never Letting Go. The action takes place in a future world where all of the women have died and men have mysteriously been given what they call “The Noise,” a.k.a. an affliction that puts every single one of their thoughts on full display.[video_embed id='-1']RELATED: Marvel execs still don’t trust Tom Holland[/video_embed]The trailer picks up with a girl named Violet (Ridley) crashing onto the planet from her spaceship, where she’s met by a boy named Todd (Holland) who has never seen a girl in his entire life. He vows to protect her, but as the pair quickly learn that’s a pretty tall order as various people hunt them down. Adding to the chaos is the fact that Todd also happens to have a secret power, one that may help them understand the mysterious history that brought them both to this point.
Not only is the sneak peek viewers’ first chance to see Holland and Ridley in action together, but it’s their first real glimpse into the cinematized world of the
Chaos trilogy. In order to capture “The Noise” the filmmakers have used water-like effects to kind of replicate thought bubbles, and as the trailer shows some guys have a harder time controlling their inner dialogues than others. Add in some high-stakes chase scenes, more potential ships coming to earth and a giant CGI snake, and this trailer is about as dramatic as they come.
Rumoured Fantastic Beasts actor Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, Kurt Sutter and David Oyelowo also star in the film, which has been in the works for years now. The movie was originally supposed to be released in 2019, but reshoots pushed the entire thing back. Now it’s projected to hit theatres in January 2021, although with the pandemic putting so many theatrical releases on hold right now, fans shouldn’t be surprised if the date (or venue) changes. On the bright side if it is released, this could be the film to tide over sci-fi fans until the
highly anticipated but pushed-back Dune comes out next October.Ness’ 2008 book was a best-seller, prompting a movie deal way back in 2013. At the time Robert Zemeckis was supposed to direct, and he asked Charlie Kaufman to help him write the screenplay. Then, in 2016 current director Doug Liman (
The Bourne Identity) stepped in, and the movie is now credited with a whopping six screenwriters including Kaufman and John Lee Hancock (of
The Blind Side fame). While the trailer certainly looks promising, some fans are still concerned. After all, in 2018 when Lionsgate brass saw what their $100-million investment had landed them they called it “un-releasable” and ordered the extra shoots. Fans can only hope that the time, money, and extra work were worth it, because this film has the potential to land both Ridley and Holland another franchise in addition to their respective
Star Wars and
Spider-Man work.In the meantime, everyone is probably just feeling a little
chaotic while they wait out the release.[video_embed id='2079282']BEFORE YOU GO: We try the Band-Aid mask hack... and it works! [/video_embed]
