In 1990, Tim O’Brien published a collection of linked short stories about a platoon of American soldiers fighting on the ground in the Vietnam War titled, The Things They Carried. Today, those stories are being reimagined for the big screen — with the help of an all-star, Hollywood cast.

So far, Tom Hardy (Mad Max), Stephan James (21 Bridges), Bill Skarsgård (It), Tye Sheridan (X-Men), Ashton Sanders (Moonlight), Martin Sensmeier (The Magnificent Seven), Moises Arias (Five Feet Apart), Angus Cloud (Euphoria), and Pete Davidson (The King of Staten Island) have all been cast in the film. If that seems like an impressive roster, well, it is. As Deadline reports, “It’s hard to recall a deeper lineup of in-demand young talent for a recent indie movie.” The novel, which has generated no shortage of praise and recognition over the last few decades, is based upon O’Brien’s experiences as a soldier in the 23rd Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. Equal parts war memoir and a blend of historical fiction and non-fiction, these stories were shared in an effort to shed light on the life-altering experience of war. Often taught in middle schools and high schools across America, this isn’t the first time O’Brien’s storytelling will be adapted for the screen (lest we forget A Soldier’s Sweetheart in 1998) but the line-up of talent certainly sets the stage for a uniquely epic rendition.[video_embed id='1940381']WATCH: Tom Hardy will read you bedtime stories on popular BBC show[/video_embed]While the cast announcement has generated plenty of buzz, much of the online commentary seems to focus on Pete Davidson. According to some, the King of Staten Island isn’t exactly the most obvious pick for a war movie alongside some of his tenured co-stars. But, that’s not to say there aren’t plenty of Pete Davidson fans cheering him on from across the internet. As one user says, Pete is ‘booked and busy’ these days. One fan even went as far as suggesting that Davidson could be this generation’s Tom Hanks. What do you think, could this project be the comedian’s big break into big-budget Hollywood dramas? The Things They Carried will be directed by Rupert Sanders, with the help of a script adaptation from screenwriter Scott B. Smith. David Zander and Hardy and Dean Baker are set to produce, with Amy T. Hu acting as the film’s executive producer. [video_embed id='2049925']WATCH: 'Horse girl' from Alberta can gallop and jump just like a horse[/video_embed]
