Shia LaBeouf seems to be staging a pretty big comeback. After a two-year hiatus, the actor shot to critical acclaim with two 2019 movies,
The Peanut Butter Falcon and
Honey Boy, and now Marvel is supposedly hot to work with him in a cool new role.According
to We Got This Covered (the same site that correctly first reported a
She-Hulk show at Disney Plus and a live-action
Robin Hood remake at Disney), Marvel is hoping to land LaBeouf to play Iceman in their new
X-Men reboot. Previously, MCU was supposedly considering LaBeouf to breathe life into Moon Knight (a rich vigilante character similar to Batman), and while the site reports that LaBeouf is still in the running for that role, the powers-that-be are supposedly more interested in his take on the
X-Men character. And, considering LaBeouf’s
previous criticism with doing big-budget studio films, this could be a nice way for him to ease back into things without having the pressure as a lead.[video_embed id='-1']RELATED: Shia LaBeouf plays his own father in biopic[/video_embed]LaBeouf certainly has the action-film roles down pat. The 34-year-old has done everything from
I, Robot and
Constantine to
Indiana Jones and
Transformers. However, he's also publicly battled mental health and addiction issues, a period of his life that he partly captured in his
semi-autobiographical film Honey Boy, which he wrote while in a rehabilitation centre. (LaBeouf played his father in the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival entry)."I don't think there was any acting going on," LaBeouf
previously told The Hollywood Reporter of his gigs with directors Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay. "This was, like, personality. There was no acting going on for the huge front half of my career. This was all just my personality exhibited on a camera. It's the ordinary kid in the extraordinary situation over and over and over again. And that's actually what I was — I was an ordinary kid, for real, in an extraordinary situation, for real."Since
Honey Boy’s release, LaBeouf has also signed on to star in the 2020 flick
Pieces of a Woman and the upcoming project
Don’t Worry Darling alongside Florence Pugh, Dakota Johnson, Olivia Wilde and Chris Pine. The actor also went all-in while committing to the role of “Creeper” in the August 7 release of David Ayer’s
The Tax Collector, a film for which he
tattooed his entire chest. Meanwhile, that movie has
drawn criticism and controversy for the way in which LaBeouf’s character looks and talks. “Shia is playing a whiteboy who grew up in the hood,”
Ayer revealed on Twitter earlier this summer. “This is a Jewish dude playing a white character. Also the only white character in the movie.”As for Iceman, the character has been played by some notable people before—including Canadian Shawn Ashmore, who fronted him in many of the big screen offerings and voiced him in
The Super Hero Squad Show. The character is one of the founding members of the X-Men and has the ability to freeze water vapour. That not only allows him to freeze objects around him but he can also turn his body into ice. In the comic books, he is also one of the more
prominent gay characters. On the Marvel side of this potential casting, it’s worth noting that MCU actually has a lot more riding on the upcoming
X-Men revival than you’d think. Back in the 1990s, Marvel sold off the rights to the characters in order to avoid bankruptcy, but now that Disney bought 20
th Century Fox for a whopping $71.3 billion US, MCU finally has the chance to make the movies
on its own terms. That has some fans believing that with the studio and actor both looking to reinvent themselves, this could be a match made in heaven.[video_embed id='2010377']BEFORE YOU GO: A 'Dirty Dancing' sequel is in the works with Jennifer Grey[/video_embed]
