Seth Rogen pulls double duty in first look at new HBO Max film 'An American Pickle'

Rogen co-stars with himself in the upcoming comedy.

Seth Rogen has found himself in a real pickle of a situation. The Canadian actor is starring in the upcoming comedy An American Pickle from HBO Max and is pulling double-duty, playing two characters who are 100 years apart in age. Luckily for Rogen, his beard works in 2020 and 1920.Due out on the streaming service on August 6 (2020), Rogen plays Herschel Greenbaum, a man who emigrates from Eastern Europe to America in 1920 with his wife Sarah, played by Succession’s Sarah Snook. Emerging 100 years later, Herschel has been perfectly…pickled…and seeks out his only living relative, a great-grandson named Ben, who is also played by Rogen. Having lost both his parents in a car accident, Ben and Herschel bond over their shared grief of losing their loved ones. Herschel inspires Ben to take charge of his life while Ben teaches Herschel the ways of the 21st century, which include a polio vaccine, taxis and David Bowie. An American Pickle is based on Simon Rich’s 2013 novella Sell Out, which first appeared in The New York Times. Rich wrote the screenplay for An American Pickle, which is being directed by Brandon Trost, who worked with Rogen as the cinematographer on The Disaster Artist, Neighbors, The Night Before and This Is The End.The upcoming comedy will be the first original feature film to arrive on HBO Max. Let Them All Talk, directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Meryl Streep and Gemma Chan, and Superintelligence, directed by Ben Falcone and starring Melissa McCarthy, are expected to premiere on the streaming service in the fall.HBO Max officially launched in May, and several of the platform's previously announced series, including the highly anticipated Friends reunion and the reboot of Gossip Girl, have been pushed back due to filming delays caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.In addition to An American Pickle, Rogen is continuing his work as an executive producer on the dark comedy Black Monday, which follows the stock market crash of 1987. Rogen is also reteaming with his writing partner Evan Goldberg to produce a reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Nickelodeon announced the return of Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo on June 30, confirming that the feature film will be CG animated. Starting with 1990’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles all the way up to 2016’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, the upcoming film marks the seventh time the crime-fighting brothers will be on the big screen.
